Al Horford Biography and Age
Al was born on June 3, 1986, in the town of San Felipe de Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic, as one of the five children of Tito Horford and his wife, Arelis Reynoso. He grew up in a sports-mad family with his father, who was a retired professional basketball player and was known for playing for three years in the NBA and two years for the Bucks. You can’t be far from the truth when you say that Horford developed his passion for basketball primarily by watching his father play. Among the other players who apparently inspired him in this game were Shaquille O’Neal, Grant Hill, and Tim Duncan. Interestingly, Al’s Uncle Kelly also played for Florida Atlantic University.
At the age of 14, Horford moved with his family to Lansing, Michigan, United States, where he enrolled at Grand Ledge High School in Grand Ledge, Michigan, where he also began to demonstrate his basketball skills. As the basketball star of his school, he held seven amazing school records, including the highest career points with 1,239. In his senior year, he was named Player of the Year in Class A after achieving an average of 21 points, 13 rebounds, and five blocks per game. He also played for the Michigan Mustangs in AAU basketball, and in 2007, after his team had won the league for several years, he was declared an NBA draft.
After graduating high school, Horford received a sports scholarship at the University of Florida based on his outstanding athletic performance. There he played for the Gator, and through his efforts on the team’s frontcourt, he was able to win the 2005 Southern Conference Tournament Championship. His team was the first to win the championship in a row and the first to do so with the same starting line-up. However, the young, promising basketball player retired in 2007 to play for the Atalanta Hawks, and his first nine years on the team brought him massive success as they marked the beginning of his professional career.
