Beth Ditto’s Bio
Beth Ditto was actually born as Mary Beth Patterson on February 19, 1981, in Arkansas (southeastern region of the United States). Ditto did not have a particularly beautiful childhood not only because she was born into a poor family living in a tiny house in Searcy, but also because of the many stepfathers, brothers and sisters, and travels she had to deal with, deal with, and endure.
She was raised together with her six siblings (three older and three younger) as Southern Baptist and Pentecostal. At the young age of thirteen, she had to move out of the house to live with her aunt. In 1999 she moved to Olympia, Washington, and in 2003 to Portland, Oregon, where she lived until 2004.
In 2013 she also married her longtime friend Kristin Ogata. The duo got married at an all-white event held in Maui, Hawaii. Seventeen months later, they married legally in their home state of Oregon after waiting so long for same-sex marriage to become legal there.
At 18, after being influenced by bands such as Siouxsie and the Banshees, The Raincoats, Nirvana, and Pearl Jam, Beth Ditto joined guitarist Nathan Howdeshell (aka Brace Paine) and drummer Hannah Blilie to form the band Gossip in 1999.
Her breakthrough came in 2006 with the release of her album Standing in the Way of Control, which was followed by Music for Men in 2009. The band eventually broke up in 2016, but before they went their separate ways, their last album was released in 2012 as Group A Joyful Noise. The band played a mixture of the post-punk revival, indie rock, and dance rock. In the same year that Gossip broke up, Ditto also released their memoir Coal to Diamonds, which was co-written with Michelle Tea.
Beth’s career did not begin and end with Gossip, she was also involved in other musical projects, such as the single Consequences for the Crisis charity, where she joined forces with other artists to use her voice to raise funds for a charity for the homeless.
In 2010 she worked with Simian Mobile Disco on the album Temporary Pleasure, on which she sang in the title Cruel Intentions. In 2013 she sang on Blondies A Rose by Any Name – a title from the album Ghosts of Download, released in 2013.
In 2017 she made her solo debut with the single Fire. The song was a mixture of punk, pop, and disco, which she had explored with the Gossip, a little of her southern roots was also to be seen on the album.
