The American singer and songwriter is known under the stage name Beth Ditto and is known for her work with the indie rock band Gossip. The electrifying artist describes herself as a fat, feminist lesbian from Arkansas and is said to have a voice as strong as Tina Turner, Etta James, and Janis Joplin.

Beth Ditto was actually born as Mary Beth Patterson on February 19, 1981, in Arkansas (southeastern region of the United States). Ditto did not have a particularly beautiful childhood not only because she was born into a poor family living in a tiny house in Searcy, but also because of the many stepfathers, brothers and sisters, and travels she had to deal with, deal with, and endure.

She was raised together with her six siblings (three older and three younger) as Southern Baptist and Pentecostal. At 18, after being influenced by bands such as Siouxsie and the Banshees, The Raincoats, Nirvana, and Pearl Jam, Beth Ditto joined guitarist Nathan Howdeshell (aka Brace Paine) and drummer Hannah Blilie to form the band Gossip in 1999.

Her breakthrough came in 2006 with the release of her album Standing in the Way of Control, which was followed by Music for Men in 2009. The band eventually broke up in 2016, but before they went their separate ways, their last album was released in 2012 as Group A Joyful Noise. The band played a mixture of post-punk revival, indie rock, and dance rock. In the same year that Gossip broke up, Ditto also released their memoir Coal to Diamonds, which was co-written with Michelle Tea.

Beth’s career did not begin and end with Gossip, she was also involved in other musical projects, such as the single Consequences for the Crisis charity, where she joined forces with other artists to use her voice to raise funds for a charity for the homeless.

In 2010 she worked with Simian Mobile Disco on the album Temporary Pleasure, on which she sang in the title Cruel Intentions. In 2013 she sang on Blondies A Rose by Any Name – a title from the album Ghosts of Download, released in 2013.

In 2017 she made her solo debut with the single Fire. The song was a mixture of punk, pop, and disco, which she had explored with the Gossip, a little of her southern roots was also to be seen on the album.

There are numerous other facts to know about Beth Ditto, and one of them is her sexual orientation. She is a lesbian who is popularly known for her blatant support of the LGBT community. In fact, the album Standing in the Way of Control, written by Ditto, is said to be a reaction to the US government’s ban on gay marriage.

Ditto is also a strong supporter of feminists and gender issues. She advocates that women of a certain size should be proud and positive about themselves.

After being named the coolest person in the rock by the NME in 2007, she posed naked on the cover of the music magazine. She was also seen naked on the covers of the erotic magazine On Our Backs and the London Bible Love.

In 2013 she was arrested for standing in the way of a car. According to reports, a bartender reportedly refused to give her another shot after she was apparently too drunk to have another cocktail, she walked out in the middle of the street, took off her shoes and purse and started screaming, “Obama! Obama!’ when friends tried to put her in a car.
