Details about his upbringing and the family he came from are hard to know, but it is known that he grew up in Fair Lawn, a borough in Bergen County, New Jersey. There, at Memorial Junior High School, he took up acting after auditioning for a school play just to get the attention of a girl he liked.

He later attended Liberal Arts College, Ithaca College, and earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Music Theater. Charlie took part in numerous plays at school, and his love of acting has not diminished in any way since.
