With “Luther” one of the most popular crime series in Europe came to an end in 2019 – also because Hollywood star Idris Elba simply did not have time. He reprises the role of Luther: The Fallen Sun. Here’s the trailer:

“Luther: The Fallen Sun” marks the return of Detective Superintendent John Luther of the London Police Department’s Serious Crime Unit (SCU), portrayed by Idris Elba between 2010 and 2019 as charismatic, intelligent and powerful. The BBC production ran successfully for five seasons and a total of 20 episodes in Germany. Now the popular character is back with a feature film.

In the UK and US, the film will be shown in select cinemas for two weeks at the end of February. Then follow “Luther: The Fallen Sun” launches March 10, 2023 worldwide and exclusively on the streaming service Netflix.

This is what Luther: The Fallen Sun is about

Because of his unconventional, sometimes illegal methods, Luther (Idris Elba) was fired and even jailed for a murder he allegedly committed. Thanks to his brilliant mind, the ex-detective manages to break out. Instead of leaving town or at least going into hiding, he immediately sets about finishing up unfinished business from his police career.

Luther’s goal is to take down ruthless serial killer and cyberpsychopath David Robey (Andy Serkis). But he always seems to be one step ahead. A dangerous game of cat and mouse ensues between the two men. Luther receives unexpected support from a policewoman (Cynthia Erivo), while his former superior Schenk (Dermot Crowley) tries to stop him by any means necessary…

Idris Elba is Luther. And who else is there?

Jamie Payne (“Outlander”) directed the comeback hit. He had already directed a total of four ‘Luther’ episodes. The screenplay, on the other hand, is written by series creator Neil Cross, who also acts as producer.

The title role is again played by Idris Elba, who once celebrated his worldwide breakthrough as a criminal in the American series “The Wire”. The Londoner’s major cinematic roles include his role as Heimdall in the Marvel blockbusters “Thor 1-3” and “Avengers 2+3” and as Bloodsport in DC’s “The Suicide Squad”. He was also featured prominently in “Star Trek Beyond”, “Prometheus”, and “Fast & Furious: Hobbs & Shaw”.
