When you’re born the son of a father with amazing musical abilities, enough to earn several Grammys, and a mother who’s a gorgeous model and a great actor, there’s little chance of escaping the entertainment industry, and this was the case with Duncan Jones, son of the legendary David Bowie and his first wife Angie, who, although originally pursuing a career in philosophy, found his way to filmmaking.
He is best known for his 2009 science fiction film Moon. Although it was his first work, it had the quality that earned him several award nominations, some of which he won, including a BAFTA for Outstanding Debut of a British Writer, Director or Producer.
Duncan Jones has improved over the years, which easily proves that he is indeed the son of multi-talented David Bowie. His other notable films include Source Code (2011), Warcraft (2016) and Mute (2018), which was released on Netflix. Follow us as we try to shed more light on his family and how they grew up as the first son of a musical superstar.
Duncan Jones Father and Mother
Duncan Jones’ father David Bowie and his first wife Angie (née Barnett) received him on 30 May 1971 in Bromley, London. Duncan, whose birth name is Duncan Zowie Haywood Jones, was to become their only son. His middle name Zowie was given to him, obviously to rhyme with his father’s stage name Bowie.
Duncan’s parents met in 1969 through a mutual friend, record manager Dr. Calvin Mark Lee. His mother was just 19 years old at the time. They had a stormy romance that culminated in their marriage on March 19, 1970, at the Bromley Register Office on Beckenham Lane in London. About a year later, Duncan arrived.
In the early stages of their marriage, Duncan’s parents seem to have had the time of their lives, as they traveled together on international trips. Bowie even wrote a song about them called “The Prettiest Star”. However, before Duncan’s 7th birthday, his parents had separated and officially divorced on February 8, 1980, in Switzerland. Bowie lived at that time in the country where he was exiled for tax evasion.
Unlike his father, Duncan Jones was never a lover of the limelight, which is one of the main reasons why he never considered a career as a musician or actor. Although his father tried to encourage him to love music by pushing him to learn instruments from guitar to piano to saxophone, young Duncan never found a passion for music. Instead, he was interested in a vocation where the paparazzi wouldn’t follow him – an opportunity he feared as he grew up with his superstar father.
He watched from the wings while his father roared crowds of people, and when it was time to go home, the paparazzi waiting outside was more or less a nightmare for young Duncan, who spent most of his childhood growing up with the Scottish nanny Marion Skene.
In an interview with the Daily Mail, his very first about his father Bowie, Duncan said that his early years with his father were the best time he spent with him. They watched many films together that would later influence Duncan’s interest in filmmaking and he had his father’s full support. The Nerdist Podcast, he mentioned that he was lucky to have the opportunity to say one last goodbye to his father.
While Duncan obviously got along very well with his father, the same cannot be said of his relationship with his mother from whom he was estranged. Their relationship began to suffer around 2010. Angie said during her appearance in Celebrity Big Brother that her relationship with her son was beyond repair. Since 2018 they have continued to be estranged. Duncan said in his interview for Marc Maron’s WTF podcast that his mother was a “caustic person”. After Angie was divorced from Bowie, she entered into a long-term relationship with punk musician Drew Blood and had a daughter with him.
His Wife (Rodene Ronquillo)
Duncan Jones is married to the photographer Rodene Ronquillo. They were married on November 6, 2012, about 5 months after Duncan announced their engagement. Unfortunately for her, Ronquillo was diagnosed with breast cancer on the day of the marriage. She was in remission until 2013 and has remained cancer-free ever since.
They have at least two children together, including a son named Stenton David Jones, born on 10 July 2016, and a daughter Zowie Tala Mabsie Jones, born on 18 April 2018.
Height – How Tall Is He?
Duncan Jones is 5 feet 10 inches tall, the same height as his late father David Bowie. Like his father, Duncan has dark brown hair. He also has blue eyes.
