A construction worker was killed in the tragic Spinnaker Sea Isle balcony collapse incident.

A tragic incident involving a balcony collapse occurred on Friday, February 24, 2023, Friday afternoon at the Spinnaker South Tower apartment building, located at the 3600 block of the Boardwalk in Sea Isle City.

The accident resulted in the death of a 43-year-old Philadelphia construction worker, Jose Pereira. The incident occurred around 2:20 p.m. and Pereira was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Spinnaker South Tower is located on the north side of the complex. The collapse occurred on the side of the building that faced the ocean. The building was built in 2008 and had 63 units.

According to reports, Pereira was working on the seventh floor when the balcony above him collapsed.

Two other workers were on the eighth floor at the time of the accident. Officials believe the workers were preparing to paint when the incident happened. The cause of the collapse is still unknown and the investigation is ongoing.

Nearby neighbors reported hearing a loud bang followed by screams from the workers. Joye Fiocchi, who was nearby when the accident happened, said she heard the workers yell twice.

The first scream was heard when the incident happened, and the second was the last time she heard them scream.

After the collapse, a team of engineers worked from the inside to recover Pereira’s body.

Emergency services had to cut through about 12 inches of concrete to reach the victim. Then a concrete slab was lifted using heavy airbags. After the concrete was lifted, Pereira was recovered.

The repair was a delicate and complex task due to the large cracks in the surrounding area and the slope of the balcony.

After the accident, Sea Isle City first responders attempted to reach Pereira, but determined that the side of the building was unsafe. They requested additional rescue personnel and equipment and evacuated all residents from the building.

This was reported by the police on Saturday. “All exterior decks of the Spinnaker’s south tower, near where the incident occurred, are currently being stabilized. Once the building is deemed safe, further evaluations of both Spinnaker buildings will be conducted by private engineers.

The statement did not specify how many residents were forced from their homes or where they took shelter.

The victim, Pereira, was employed by Ferguson Contracting Inc. from Yardley, Pa. The company has not released a statement about the incident.

The incident is currently being investigated by Sea Isle Police detectives, with assistance from the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).

Once the investigation is complete, more information could be released about the cause of the balcony collapse.

Tragedy has community in shock and mourning. The workers’ families, colleagues and loved ones are in mourning and residents of the Spinnaker complex have been displaced by the incident.
