Gerard Pique is a product of the famous Barcelona La Masia Academy and belongs to the golden generation of Spanish football players who have stepped onto the world stage and have won practically all the laurels on offer. Pique is a central defender who plays his club football for the Spanish football giants Barcelona.
It is not often that you find a modern football player born into abundance, the usual tale is that of the rag to riches. But Gerard Pique is easily an exception in this respect. Gerard Pique was born on 2 February 1987. His father Joan Pique is a successful businessman and lawyer, while his grandfather Amador Bernabeu was a former vice-president of FC Barcelona. His mother, Montserrat, is a doctor and director of a health facility in Barcelona specializing in spinal injuries.
Pique was barely two years old when he had his first football injury when he fell off the terrace of his grandparents’ house while playing football as a toddler. Young Gerard slipped into a coma for two days but fortunately recovered without any health complications.
In 1997, at the age of 10, Gerard joined the Barcelona youth team and played as a defensive midfielder and central defender. After successfully completing all age categories at La Masia, Pique joined the English Premier League club Manchester United in 2004.
His breakthrough into Manchester United’s first team was only a long way off, as on 27 May 2008 Barca left Pique for £5 million, who was only sparingly used as a substitute player. Pique was thrilled to be reunited with his new team-mates, most of whom were his contemporaries from his time in Barca’s youth team.
Pique and club icon Carlos Puyol formed a formidable defensive partnership, the foundation on which Barca would build his biggest team to date. Along with players such as Andres Iniesta, Xavi, and the irrepressible Lionel Messi, Barcelona dominated world football with an exciting brand of possession-based football affectionately known as Tiki-Taka.
Under the club legend Pep Guardiola, they won three La Liga titles in 2009, 2010, and 2011, two Champions League titles in 2009 and 2011, the Copa del Rey 2009 and 2012, the Supercopa de España 2009, 2010 and 2011, the UEFA Super Cup 2009 and 2011 and the FIFA Club World Cup 2009 and 2011.
Pique is part of Barca’s successes in the years following Guardiola, winning four more La Liga titles and another UEFA Champions League in 2015. At the international level, Pique was part of the Spanish team that won the World Cup in 2010 and the European Championship in 2012.
Elegant in possession of the ball and blessed with a physique perfectly suited to the modern art of defense, Pique has become one of the best central defenders in world football. His similarities with the German legend Franz Beckenbauer have earned him the nickname Piquénbauer.
In 2017, Pique was heavily criticized in Spain for supporting the call for a referendum on Catalan independence sagas. Pique, a Catalan, was mistreated by other parts of Spain, a fiasco that almost led him to leave the Spanish national team.
The Catalan-born player is still one of Barcelona’s most valuable assets, even though Pique is still earning £165,000 a week in the autumn of his career. ($220,000), culminating in an annual base salary of $11.5 million. His bonuses are estimated at $3.2 million.
Gerard Pique is a fan of fast cars, his car collection includes an Aston Martin DB9, a black and white Audi Q7 2014, a Porsche Cayenne, a Mercedes SLK, a black and grey Mercedes SL550, and three Audi sports cars – (Audi A7 Sportback, Audi Q7 2016 and Audi S5)
Over the years, Pique has accumulated net assets of $40 million.
Relationship with Shakira (Wife), Kids
At the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa, Pique met the Colombian singer Shakira, who was there with her World Cup theme song Waka Waka. After a simple conversation about the weather, the two made a friendship and the rest is history.
Shakira is 10 years older than Pique, a fact that doesn’t seem to deceive the lovebirds. The couple does not seem to be interested in getting married yet. In an interview, Shakira revealed that they have everything they want together.
In January 2013 the couple welcomed a son – Milan, two years later they got their second son Sasha.
The Spanish/Brazilian defender and formidable central defender guards the last line of defense with his height of 1.94 meters (6 feet 4 inches). Pique is one of the greatest defenders in modern football.
Is Gerard Pique Gay?
A picture of Pique and his former teammate Zlatan Ibrahimovic in 2010 made tongues wag about Pique’s sexual orientation. The picture was taken at the Barcelona training ground after Zlatan went over to congratulate Gerard on the publication of his autobiography.
A visibly frustrated Pique later cleared the air with the claim that it was a media ploy to distract him and his team-mates during the battle for the 2010 La Liga title. The rumor has since subsided. It is safe to say that Gerard Pique is definitely not gay.
