Hilary Farr was born on 31 August 1951 as Hilary Elizabeth Labow in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. However, she was raised by her parents in London, United Kingdom. As a young girl, Farr was interested in many things, including athletics, theater, and home design. She came to know and love the latter through the influence of her mother, who watched and helped her design her parents’ home.

She started her career as an interior designer and moved to Los Angeles where she started buying and renovating properties. Her involvement with television and film quickly shifted from design to acting and production. Farr had the privilege of working with the likes of Ted Danson and producer Arthur Cohn in film production.

In 1972 Hilary Farr began acting under her maiden name. She starred in films such as Layout for 5 Models (1972) and in 1973 in the films Sex Farm and Never Mind the Quality, Feel the Width. She also played roles in Legend of the Werewolf (1975), The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975), City on Fire (1979), and The Return (1980).

Farr has also appeared in stage productions. She had a leading role in a Broadway production of Run For Your Wife and worked with the legendary Richard Gere in the London production of Grease. As her success in interior design and real estate grew, Farr expanded her market to New York, her hometown of Toronto, and the UK and Australia. Her success led her to work for stars like Jennifer Hudson and American actress Jenna Elfman.

Farr returned to Toronto in 2008 and was chosen to host Love It or List It with David Visentin, whom she met at the auditions. The show was a huge success and was also broadcast in Europe.
