Hines Ward was born as Hines Edward Ward Jr. on March 8, 1976, in Seoul, South Korea. Due to his ethnicity, his father is African-American and his mother is Korean, so he has always been very close to Korean culture and people.

There in Seoul, he began his life with his mother until he was one year old when she finally decided they had to leave because she feared the xenophobic challenges her son would face later.
