Each of us has probably played this game before. With a promising cast, a loving ’80s atmosphere and a crazy story, the story of how “Tetris” became a mega hit has now been made into a movie. Here’s the trailer:

“Tetris” tells the adventurous true story of a video game invented in the Soviet Union and how it began its global triumph via Japan in the 1980s. The protagonist of Dutch game designer and “Tetris” discoverer Henk Rogers plays “Kingsman” and “Rocketman” star Taron Egerton.

The comedy-drama with thriller elements will have its world premiere on March 15, 2023 as part of the film portion of the South By Southwest culture and media festival in Austin, Texas. On March 31, 2023, ‘Tetris’ will start worldwide and exclusively on the streaming service Apple TV+.

You must see these movies with your kids before they go to school. This is what Tetris is about

“It’s the perfect game,” the wildly enthusiastic Henk Rogers (Taron Egerton) reports to the boss (Togo Igawa) of the Japanese company Nintendo in the late 1980s. We are talking about “Tetris”, a very simple, but downright addictive game invented by Russian computer programmer Alexey Pajitnov (Nikita Efremov). Shortly before, Rogers learned about “Tetris” at a games conference and immediately realized its potential to become a worldwide mega hit.

That is why he is now trying to find investors to market the game worldwide. The Game Boy developers (Ken Yamamura, Ben Miles) are more than interested. The rights, however, belong to the Soviet state, which naturally does not want to make deals with Western businessmen – at least not deals from which they can come out victorious. Rogers decides to travel to Moscow and becomes entangled in a confusing and clearly life-threatening web of espionage, greed and vanity…

“Tetris”: That’s cast and creators

The film was directed by Dirty Pig and Stan & Ollie director Jon S. Baird. It is written by Noah Pink, creator, writer and executive producer of the Disney+ series Genius.

In addition to Taron Egerton, Toby Jones (Atomic Blonde), Nikita Efremov (Leto), Ben Miles (Star Wars: Andor), Roger Allam (The Sandman) and Anthony Boyle of The Plot Against America star.

Also on camera were Togo Igawa (“The Gentlemen”), Ken Yamamura (“Godzilla”), Matthew Marsh of “The Mauritanian” and “The Fast And The Furious” villain Rick Yune.
