The name Jesse Carmichael may not be immediately familiar to many music lovers, but the American pianist and guitarist have made a major contribution to the music industry as part of the hit pop-rock band Maroon 5. Carmichael has been part of this million-selling record boyband since its founding years. In addition to his work alongside the band led by Adam Levine, Carmichael has worked on other projects, most notably his solo project in 1863, and has made short films.

Carmichael was born Jesse Royal Carmichael on April 2, 1979, in Boulder, Colorado. Jesse inherited his artistic side from his father Bob Carmichael, who is a photographer. He sometimes photographs the Maroon 5 during their tours. One of Jesse’s sisters followed in her father’s footsteps to become a photographer. He has a younger sister named Annie.\

His family later moved to Los Angeles, California, where he would attend Brentwood High School. At school, Carmichael took a liking to musical instruments and began playing the guitar. Because of his love of music, he soon became friends with his classmates Adam Levine, Mickey Madden, and Ryan Dusick. The boys then decided to form a rock band, which they named Kara’s Flowers, after a girl in their school they had a collective crush on.

The band initially played all over LA. One day, while performing on a beach in Malibu, they caught the attention of independent producer Tommy Allen, who was to help them get a record deal with Reprise Records. The band caused quite a stir in LA and released their debut album The Fourth World in 1997. However, the album was a huge failure for the band and the label, which could only sell 5,000 copies. Six months after their contract expired, the label dropped them. Carmichael and his boys were very disappointed that they were thinking of breaking up.

After high school graduation, Carmichael and Levine went to Five Towns College in Long Island, New York. While Carmichael began learning to play the keyboard in college, he and Levine were strongly influenced by the urban music style that surrounded them. Two years later, they developed a new idea of what their band should look like and called their bandmates at Kara Flowers to form Maroon 5 in 2001. They included guitarist James Valentine as part of the new band. Maroon 5 signed a contract with Octone Records and released their debut album Songs About Jane with great success. The rest is history.

Jesse Carmichael took a break from Maroon 5 in 2012 to focus on a new passion – “music and the healing arts”. He returned in 2014 and has remained with the band ever since.

In June 2018, the couple welcomed their first child, a son named Hendrix Royal.

Tara Lankford joined Mink Radiologic Imaging, Venice, California in April 2010 as Marketing Manager. She received a Bachelor of Arts (BA), Communications; History of Art and Architecture from the University of California, Santa Barbara, California in 2007. During her college years, Lankford spent a year studying abroad in Rome, Italy under the Education Abroad Program (EAP).

In college Lankford was a member of Lambda Pi Eta and was an active participant in the Surfrider Foundation. For three years, between 2005 and 2008, she worked as a sales representative at Prudential Real Estate. For one year, between 2008 and 2009, Lankford worked as Marketing Manager at Kaplan Test Prep.
