Kelly Tilghman – Biography
Kelly Tilghman was born on August 6, 1989, in North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Here she grew up as the only girl in a family of five children, of which she was also the oldest.
Tilghman was raised by her parents, Phil and Kathryn Tilghman. In addition to her parents’ involvement in golf, her father was the mayor of North Myrtle Beach, a position he held for 14 years while he was a businessman. Her mother had a career in media sales and was also a professional dancer who was inducted into the National Hall of Fame of Dance.
Her love of golf is something that has been part of her life since she was a child, as it is the sport of her family practices. She grew up primarily on the Gator Hole Golf Course, which her family owned for more than two decades, from 1980 to 2002. Her father drove her around the golf course while she was growing up.
This prepared her long before she decided to get involved in this sport. More than that, Melvin Hemphill, who was her grandfather, was also a coach in the same sport. There are other members of the family, including Kathryn Hemphill, who was her great-aunt, and her mother, who also played golf at some level.
Kelly Tilghman would sneak out with her brothers to play with them until it got dark. But even more than golf, she loved basketball when she was a child, and she also played soccer. Nevertheless, she returned to golf, which she described as a somewhat solitary sport because she was encouraged by her father, who believed that her talent lay in it.
Tilghman showed as much talent as she played that she later received a scholarship to Duke University where she continued to play. However, she was easily distracted by this sport, but soon found her way back. After graduating, she received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science and History from the university.
By this time she was already tired of golf, so she later got several jobs, including assistant to the JV basketball coach and at McCormick Ranch Golf Club.
She later returned to golf, but left it, although there were many who were willing to put money on her. Her rise to fame began in 1995 when she began working with The Golf Channel and continued until 2018
