Kim Dotcom is a German Internet entrepreneur who has become famous for his online investments. Recently he has been in the news for various things including copyright infringement, money laundering, extortion, and wire transfer fraud, which is why the U.S. Department of Justice is trying to extradite him from New Zealand, where he lives, to the United States.
Kim Dotcom’s Bio
While he is usually known as Kim Dotcom, Kimble, or even Kim Tim Jim Vestor, he was born as Kim Schmitz on January 21, 1974, in Kiel, West Germany. His father was German and his mother Finnish.
For his secondary education, Kim attended the German Hauptschule. As a small child, he was already involved in programming and later became famous as a youthful hacker who was arrested for selling stolen phone card numbers. Although he was later found guilty, he was sentenced to a two-year suspended sentence because he was only 20 years old at the time.
Even before that, Kim Dotcom, who went by the name Kimble, was famous for claiming that he had hacked through the security systems of NASA, the Pentagon, and Citibank. He also claimed to have been involved in several other hacks.
He then moved to Hong Kong and founded Megaupload Ltd, a company that was later shut down by the U.S. Department of Justice to provide online file hosting services. It was estimated at over 175 million dollars.
Before that, he used the Internet boom of 2000 to found his security company Dara Protect. This company enabled him to sign a contract with Lufthansa. In 2001, Kim Schmitz bought Letsbuyit.com shares worth 375,000 euros. After revealing that he was sure that the nearly bankrupt company would break even, he announced that he would invest 50 million euros in the company. This caused the company’s share price to skyrocket, and then he immediately paid off with a profit of 1.5 million euros. He traveled to Thailand but was arrested in Bangkok soon after.
He then decided to go to Hong Kong where he founded Trendax, Kimvestor Ltd, Monkey Ltd, and Data Protect Ltd in 2003 and Megaupload in 2005. At some point, Megaupload was so successful that it became one of the 15 most visited websites.
In 2009 he would soon leave Hong Kong for New Zealand. In 2012, his villa was raided by the FBI, a SWAT team, and police officers, who also shut down Megaupload.com, and in 2015 Kim Dotcom had to lose up to $67 million (£45 million) of his assets to the United States government.
Where Is He Now?
Dotcom has spent the last few years in New Zealand, where he fought against his extradition to the United States, where he is facing various lawsuits against him. He also got involved in politics and founded the Internet Party in 2013, but since he could not win seats and the number of members dropped below 500, it was deregistered in 2018.
In 2015 Kim Dotcom and three other founders of Megaupload were found extraditable by the district court. The ruling was upheld by the New Zealand High Court in 2017 following an appeal by Dotcom’s legal team. Following a second appeal, the 2018 ruling was upheld by the New Zealand Court of Appeal in 2018, and its legal team filed a third appeal with the Supreme Court.
In 2009 Kim Dotcom married Mona Verga, whom he met in 2007. Mona Verga, who was a model from the Philippines, has five children with the Interprenuer. However, their marriage could not survive beyond 2014, as they decided to settle for a divorce.
The next woman to become the wife of Kim Schmitz is Elizabeth Donnelly, whom he married in 2018. Kim and Elizabeth, a law student and businesswoman, first announced their relationship in 2016, and by 2017 they were engaged before becoming engaged despite their age difference, which makes them over 20 years younger than their husband.
Kim Dotcom, who is accused of having illegally amassed a fortune, is known for his wasteful lifestyle, which he constantly flaunts. In 2012 he is said to have had a net worth of $200 million. His recent net worth is not known, as he has claimed that his legal battles have cost him much of his fortune.
He has sued the New Zealand government for $6.8 billion, including for the destruction of his business, damage to his reputation, and legal costs. If he accidentally wins the lawsuit, his net worth will definitely be very high.
Kim Dotcom is a man of massive height and build, standing at a height of 200.5 cm (6 feet 7 inches) with a bodyweight of 141 kg (311 lbs).
