Mychal Thompson is the father of Klay Thompson, the famous NBA star. Mychal himself was also a former NBA player who married Julie Thompson, a Division 1 volleyball player. Mychal George Thompson is a Bahamian basketball player who was born in Nassau, the Bahamas on January 30, 1955. As a teenager, he moved to the United States and settled in Miami, Florida, where he received an education.

Mychal studied at Miami Jackson Senior High School and at the University of Minnesota, where he had an outstanding academic career. Mychal was very active in basketball both in high school and college. He was part of a starting lineup nicknamed “Jackson 5” which included him, a Cuban, and three other Bahamians. They were so spectacular in their games that they beat their opponents by 30 points per game.

After college, Mychal Thompson set the record of being the first foreign-born player to be voted number one by the Portland Blazers in the 1978 NBA draft of the Portland Blazers. Mychal Thompson was a fixture in the Portland Blazers lineup for eight years. After being very productive in the strong forward and midfield positions, he made the all-rookie team in 1979. In the 1981-82 season, he was at his best with an average of 20 points and 11 rebounds per game, which he usually played frequently.

In the early days of his career, he was replaced a few times before joining the Lakers, where his career flourished. He played alongside the likes of Abdul-Jabbar, Magic Johnson, and James Worthy in the Lakers before retiring in 1991. His retirement came after he helped the team win successive titles in 1987 and 88 and also played in the 1989 finals.

2. Broadcast Career

Mychal is not yet finished being involved in the fast-paced game of basketball. His playing career, which ended over a decade ago, marked the beginning of his broadcasting career. He worked as a color commentator for the Minnesota Timberwolves for two years before becoming a regular voice on the Lakers radio show. During his radio career, he worked alongside the likes of Joel Meyers and John Ireland.
