It has long been clear that “Avatar: The Way Of Water” will overtake the iceberg epic “Titanic” at the box office – now this has happened twice in the same weekend, namely both in Germany and internationally.
Disney and its affiliates
First of all, the “bad” news for all fans of “Avatar 2: The Way Of Water”: The Pandora adventure is no longer number 1 in the current German cinema charts, which are measured by visitor numbers. “Ant-Man And The Wasp: Quantumania” got off to the strongest start of 2023 with 345,000 admissions in its first five days and replaced “Avatar 2” at the top – according to InsideKino, an estimated 150,000 people went to the cinema in its tenth weekend. And, of course, they paid good money for their tickets, which leads to a new record for “Avatar 2” …
… because “Avatar 2: The Way Of Water” is now the most successful film of all time in Germany, measured by sales! With current revenues of 129.2 million euros, “Avatar 2” overtook the previous leader “Titanic” – including the revenue of the most recent re-release, this currently stands at 128.2 million euros. Incidentally, all three of the highest-grossing cinema films in Germany come from James Cameron: because “Avatar – Aufbruch nach Pandora” is in third place with 119.2 million euros in revenue.
Ranked 3rd in the highest grossing films worldwide
And internationally, “Avatar 2” has now sunk “Titanic” – and is now number 3 of the most successful films ever. Deadline says “Avatar 2” is a small step ahead of “Titanic” at $2.242 billion and $2.243 billion in global revenue to date, but this gap is likely to widen significantly as Cameron’s Pandora sequel continues to run very successfully in cinemas. And who knows what else is in it.
This results (for now) in the following. new ranking of the four highest grossing films of all time worldwide, of which James Cameron directed three (!):
1st Place: “Avatar: Dawn of Pandora” ($2.92 billion) 2nd Place: “Avengers: Endgame” ($2.79 billion) 3rd Place: “Avatar 2: The Way Of Water” ($2.243 billion) 1st place 4: “Titanic” ($2.242 billion) “Avatar 2”: that’s how much money mega hit director James Cameron has already brought in personally
But even if “Avatar 2” is currently breaking one record after another: it should not be able to set one, namely that of the most successful film in Germany measured by admissions. Here the number 1 should probably remain “The Jungle Book” forever. In the late 1960s, more than 27 million tickets were sold in Germany for the Disney classic. The second place in this ranking goes to “Titanic” – by the way, James Cameron’s blockbuster is quite unsinkable here with 18.97 million visitors at the moment.
Measured by ticket sales, “Avatar 2” currently ranks 32nd in the all-time German cinema list with 9.5 million visitors, but is likely to rise. The places immediately before are currently occupied by “The Ten Commandments” (No. 31 – estimated 9.636 million tickets), “Aristocatten” (No. 30 – estimated 9.695 million tickets) and “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets” (No. .29 – 9,736 tickets). ) proven.
Man sees ‘Avatar 2’ 100 (!) times in the cinema: this is how James Cameron responds
