Nik Stauskas is a Canadian-born professional basketball player who plays for the Portland Trail Blazers. His professional career dates back to 2014 when he was drafted by the Sacramento Kings. The NBA star also had relatively short stints with the Philadelphia 76ers and the Brooklyn Nets before joining the Blazers in 2018. Before going pro, Staukas had a two-year college basketball career at the University of Michigan. He plays for the Canadian national team on the international front.
Nik Stauskas’s Bio
The NBA star was born on October 7, 1993, as Nikolas Tomas Stauskas in Mississauga, a city in the Canadian province of Ontario. His parents are Ruta and Paul Staukus. He is of Lithuanian descent, as three of his four grandparents (paternal and maternal) lived in Lithuania before the Second World War. He also speaks the Lithuanian language. He grew up together with a sibling, a brother named Peter. Growing up Nik Strauskas showed very little interest in ice hockey and street field hockey, which is very unlikely for an average Canadian child. At the age of 6, he tried his hand at soccer until an arm injury put an end to it.
Stauskas eventually began playing basketball at the Ausra Sports Club, a Toronto-based sports organization that supports children of Lithuanian descent. He began his high school career at the Loyola Catholic Secondary School in Ontario, Canada, until the 2008-09 season, when the school’s basketball team was almost down due to the unavailability of coaches. As a result, he was transferred to South Kent School, an all-boys boarding school in Connecticut for the 2009/10 season. At the end of the school year, he transferred again to St. Mark’s School in Southborough, Massachusetts, where he completed his high school education and career.
The teenager’s arrival at St. Mark’s School came with great expectations and attracted the attention of several college recruiters. He led the school to two consecutive AA class championships of the New England Preparatory School Athletic Council (NEPSAC) in his junior and senior seasons. The team won the 2012 NEPSAC Championship, with Strauskas receiving the MVP and NEPSAC All-Class AA Team Honors.
Nik Stauskas’s commitment to the University of Michigan was well celebrated and he fulfilled expectations during his two years on the team. He was named USBWA National Freshman of the Year for the 2012-13 season, and in the second year, he was named Big Ten Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Year and also received a 2014 NCAA Men’s Basketball Consensus All-American selection.
Nik Stauskas entered the 2014 NBA Draft after his second season and was relegated to 8th place overall by the Sacramento Kings. Although he received a lot of media attention in his rookie season, the talented player had very little action on the field, as he came off the bench in all but one of his 73 appearances. He finished the season with 4.4 points and 1.2 rebounds. In July 2015 he was transferred to the Philadelphia 76ers in a multiplayer deal.
Stauskas did not have a smooth ride in his first season with the 76ers but was able to increase his score to an average of 8.5 points and 2.5 rebounds per game. He also showed a marginal improvement in the following 2016-17 season. His career with the team ended in December 2017, however, when he was transferred to the Brooklyn Nets in a multiplayer deal in mid-season.
For the rest of the 2017-18 season, he came off the bench in all 35 appearances with the Nets. In July 2018 Nik Stauskas signed for the Portland Trail Blazers as a free player.
Is Nik Stauskas Married? Girlfriend
Niks Stauskas is not married at the moment, but there are credible indications that he might be married in the near future. In August 2018, the NBA star got engaged to his girlfriend Alexandra Brynn, a law student at the University of Oregon. As Stauskas revealed, the duo’s engagement officially began on August 8, 2017, and it’s fair to say that things went pretty quickly between the two when he asked the big question after only one year.
Height and Other Body Measurements
Nik Stauskas stands at a height of 198 cm (6 feet 6 inches). He maintains his athletic build with a bodyweight of 93 kg (205 lbs). The NBA star is known for his shooting skills coupled with impressive athleticism, and he will rely on that even as he continues to push his NBA season forward.
