Penn Badgley is an American actor and musician. He is known as the lonely boy, Dan Humphrey in his melodramatic role in the CW series Gossip Girl (2007-12), which was his ticket to fame, and as the creepy bookstore owner Joe in You. He has also starred in a number of films, including John Tucker Must Die (2006), The Stepfather (2009), and Cymbeline (2015). Penn is currently the lead singer of Brooklyn-based indie band Mother (aka MOTHXR).
The frontman of the MOTHXR was born as Penn Dayton Badgley on November 1, 1986, in Baltimore, Maryland, the son of Lynne Murphy and Duff Badgley. His father was a newspaper reporter and carpenter, and a candidate for governor of the Washington Green Party in 2008. His parents divorced when he was 12 years old, and his childhood was split between Woodlake, Virginia, and Seattle, Washington.
He attended Woolridge Elementary School, where his mother became president of the PTA, although he would complete his primary education at St. Christopher’s School. During his childhood Penn Badgley was interested in many things – athletics, acting, and singing. He played youth football on a team coached by his father, was involved in acting from an early age, and while attending Charles Wright Academy in Tacoma, Washington, he joined Seattle’s Children’s Theater. Because it was important to him to do what he loved and have fun while doing it, he soon began speaking for a children’s radio station.
He turned his love of acting into a profession at the age of 11 when he moved to Hollywood. Combined with his love for acting, he also sought a career as a singer and recorded a pop single in 1998. At the age of 14, he completed his California High School Proficiency Exam and began attending Santa Monica College. After graduating, he was accepted at the University of Southern California, but due to contractual obligations, his acceptance was postponed. Nevertheless, he later enrolled at Lewis & Clark College, a private liberal arts college in Portland, Oregon, for two years, after which he graduated in 2005.
Penn took small steps in his career while focusing on the big picture all the time. In 1999 and 2000, he began voice work for the video games Mario Golf 64 and Mario Tennis 64, and made his screen debut in an episode of Will & Grace, after which he continued to get roles on shows such as Daddio, The Brothers García and What I Like About You. In a very short time, he began to gain fame and establish himself in the industry.
From 2000 to 2001 he received his first regular role as Phillip Chancellor IV in the soap opera The Young and the Restless, which also earned him his first nomination: the Young Artist Award 2001 for the best performance in a daytime series. Since then he has appeared in over 10 television series and films. His television contributions include the WB series Do Over (2002), The Mountain (2004-2005), The Bedford Diaries (2006), What I Like About You (2002), The Twilight Zone (2003), The Slap (2015).
His ticket to fame came in 2007 when he starred as the lead actor in the CW teen drama television series Gossip Girl. From 2007 to 2012 he played the role of Daniel “Dan” Humphrey, who appeared in 121 episodes of the six seasons. In 2018 he was also cast in the lead role of Joe Goldberg in You, which will premiere on September 9, 2018.
In addition to his television career, Penn Badgley is also prominently featured in films. He had supporting roles in The Fluffer (2000) and Debating Robert Lee (2003), but his leading role came in 2006 when he was cast as Scott Tucker in John Tucker Must Die, which became a box office hit in its first week. His other films include Drive-Thru (2007) Forever Strong (2008), The Stepfather (2009), Easy A (2010), Margin Call (2011), Greetings From Tim Buckley (2012), Parts Per Billion (2014), Cymbeline (2015), The Paper Store (2016), Adam Green’s Aladdin (2016).
Penn is also deeply rooted in his musical career. He is the lead singer of the band MOTHXR. They are under contract with SoundCloud under the name M O T H E R and released their song Easy on the website in 2014. The following year, the band signed with the labels Kitsuné and Washington Square Music and released their debut album Centerfold on February 26, 2016.
Wife – Domino Kirke, Dating, Girlfriend
The Gossip Girl actor had previously dated his co-star Blake Lively, who portrayed Serena van der Woodsen, from 2007 to 2010. They met on the set of the series and managed to keep their relationship private, and when they broke up, they also did a good job of hiding this from the crew.
From 2011 to 2013 he also dated Zoe Kravitz. However, their relationship was of little importance and their separation was amicable. They reportedly quit in order to focus on their careers.
Penn began a relationship with the Anglo-American singer Domino Kirke in 2014. Domino is the daughter of Simon Kirke, the drummer of Free and Bad Company and owner of the Geminola boutique in SoHo, Lorraine. She is the sister of girl actress Jemima Kirke and actress Lola Kirke, who is also an actress.
She was part of the band DOMINO and since 2009 she also works as a doula (someone who was trained to help women give birth) and is co-founder of her own doula business, Carriage House Doulas.
Penn and Domino were married on February 27, 2017, in a New York courthouse. When he married his wife, he became the stepfather of her son Cassius (born in 2009), who had come out of a previous relationship with the musician Morgan O’Kane. They held a second wedding in an open-air ceremony in June 2017, with these celebrities Mariska Hargitay, Zac Posen, and Debra Messing on the guest list.
