The fourth season of “Sex Education” already offers a heavily changed cast, with a possible fifth there will be even more changes. Because now Emma Mackey has also announced her departure.
After the end of the third season of “Sex Education”, it was already unclear how long Emma Mackey would stay on the series as Maeve, as her character says goodbye to the US in the story. But it is now clear: Maeve will continue in the fourth season – albeit in a smaller role. Mackey’s character will be less prominent.
But now it’s really time to say goodbye. On the sidelines of the British Film Awards BAFTA ceremony yesterday, Sunday Emma Mackey revealed that she doesn’t think she’ll be back for a fifth season. “I said goodbye to Maeve,” the actress said.

This ties in with earlier statements of hers that it was time to end the series. After all, she is now about eight years older than the character she plays.
She’s not the only star we see for the last time in season four. Eric also cast Ncuti Gatwa announced a week ago that the fourth season was over for him. The actor is committed to new challenges. He will take on the lead role in the British sci-fi cult series “Doctor Who”, which has been running for 60 years and is also in demand in the cinema, where he will soon appear – just like Mackey, by the way – in Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” with Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling can be seen.

It is still unclear whether there will be a fifth season of “Sex Education” at all. Netflix first has to wait for the start of the fourth season, which is expected to take place in the course of 2023. But if it goes ahead, the cast will have changed a lot. After all, several actors left the series before the fourth season, which is currently in production.
The upcoming fourth season stars Rakhee Thakrar (played teacher Emily Sands), Tanya Reynolds (played Lily, the college girl with a penchant for otherworldly eroticism), Patricia Allison (played the pansexual Ola), and Simone Ashley (Otis’s once-official “customer” Oliver). All four were there from the beginning of the series.
