Sir Ian McKellen was born on 25 May 1939 in Burnley, Lancashire, the son of Margery and Dennis McKellen. The family moved to Wigan shortly before the Second World War, where they lived until he was twelve years old. Then, in 1951, the family moved again, but this time to Bolton. He often said that growing up during the war had a long-lasting effect on him.

The actor is of Scottish and Irish descent. His father, his two grandfathers, and his great-great-grandfather were all preachers.
