Kerr’s grandfather (Stanley Kerr) had settled in Beirut and raised his family there. His grandfather was involved in the heroic rescue of women and orphans in Aleppo and Marash while working with the American humanitarian organization Near East Relief. The organization was founded after the Armenian and Assyrian genocides.

Malcolm (Steve’s father) was a university lecturer specializing in Middle East studies. A tragedy occurred on January 18, 1984. Steve’s father, the then President of the American University in Beirut, was shot dead in the hallway outside his office by armed men (later identified as Islamic Jihadists). The gruesome murder of his father left Steve traumatized. However, he found comfort in his family and in basketball. Steve Kerr had a fantastic college basketball season that year. In 1988 he finally graduated from the University of Arizona with a Bachelor’s degree in General Studies.
