Family: Father

Steve Kerr was born in Beirut, Lebanon on September 27, 1965, the son of Malcolm H. Kerr (father) and Ann Zwicker (mother). Malcolm and Ann had three other children. Kerr’s grandfather (Stanley Kerr) had settled in Beirut and raised his family there. His grandfather was involved in the heroic rescue of women and orphans in Aleppo and Marash while working with the American humanitarian organization Near East Relief. The organization was founded after the Armenian and Assyrian genocides.

Malcolm (Steve’s father) was a university lecturer specializing in Middle East studies. Like his father, he decided not to return to America but to start his own family in Beirut, which explains why Steve was born there. Steve inevitably had to spend much of his childhood in Lebanon and other Middle Eastern countries and attend their schools. However, he attended Palisades Charter High School in Los Angeles.

A tragedy occurred on January 18, 1984. Steve’s father, the then President of the American University in Beirut, was shot dead in the hallway outside his office by armed men (later identified as Islamic Jihadists). The gruesome murder of his father left Steve traumatized. However, he found comfort in his family and in basketball. Steve Kerr had a fantastic college basketball season that year. In 1988 he finally graduated from the University of Arizona with a Bachelor’s degree in General Studies.

Steve Kerr as a Coach

Kerr has had an equally amazing career as a coach. On 14 May 2014, he was appointed head coach of the Golden State Warriors. With a string of phenomenal victories, it wasn’t long before he began breaking and setting new records with the Warriors. Kerr broke the NBA record for the most regular-season victories of a junior coach. He had a string of victories that culminated in the win over the Dallas Mavericks. Steve Kerr was also the first rookie coach to win an NBA final since Pat Riley in 1982 after leading the Golden State Warriors to the 2015 NBA trophy.

In 2016, the Golden State Warriors broke the record for the most wins in an NBA season on their way to the NBA final. After a spectacular performance by Cleveland’s LeBron James, they finally lost to the Cleveland Cavaliers. However, Kerr’s Golden State Warriors, led by Kevin Durant and Stephen Curry, won against the same opponent in the 2017 NBA Final. Kerr was also president of the basketball operation and general manager of the Phoenix Suns. He was also a color commentator for the NBA at TNT.
