Thabo Sefolosha is one of the few basketball players who can be called versatile, not only because of his many positions on the court but also because of the huge leagues he has played in, from leagues in countries like Switzerland, France, Italy, Turkey to the highly regarded National Basketball Association (NBA) in America.

Thabo Patrick Sefolosha is not only the first Swiss basketball player ever to play in the NBA but he was also named the best Swiss basketball player of all time by the Swiss local newspaper Freiburger Nachrichten.

Thabo Sefolosha Biography

Born on May 2, 1984, in Vevey, Switzerland, the son of a South African musician (father) and a Swiss artist (mother). Thabo is of South African descent and a Swiss citizen. He is fluent in English, French, and Italian, probably due to the fact that he has lived in a number of countries.

On the field, Thabo Sefolosha is a sniper/small field forward. His professional basketball career began at the age of 17 when he signed with TegaRivera Basket, the highest domestic league in Switzerland. Between 2001 and 2002 he played for the Swiss team. After leaving the Swiss top team, Sefolosha crossed the borders and joined the French basketball team ElanChalon. After moving to France, he spent his first year in the team’s U21 selection. After proving himself in the U21 team, he was appointed to the senior national team. His playing time at ElanChalon ended when Thabo Sefolosha’s agent and the management of the team could not agree on the player contract. Sefolosha then agreed on an annual contract to join the Italian basketball team Angelico Biella in 2005. His time in the Italian franchise did not last longer than one season.

In 2006, Thabo realized his dream of playing in the NBA, after being voted first round by the Philadelphia 76ers and 13th overall in the 2006 NBA draft. After the drafting, he was immediately transferred to the Chicago Bulls in exchange for Rodney Carney. When Sefolosha made his debut with the Bulls on October 31, 2006, he was the first Swiss basketball player ever to play professional basketball in the NBA. He played for the Bulls until 2009 when he was traded to the Oklahoma City Thunder on the deadline. During the season that he was signed to the Oklahoma City Thunder, he was appointed to the All-NBA Defensive Second Team for the 2009-10 season.

While still a registered player for Oklahoma City Thunder, he took advantage of the 2011 NBA lockout to sign an out-clause deal with Fenerbahçe Ulker in the Turkish Basketball League, which allowed him to represent Turkish outfits in Euro League games and still return to his mother team Oklahoma City Thunder. In the last year of the 2011-2012 season, Sefolosha and Oklahoma City Thunder lost to Miami Heat in the NBA finals.

In the summer of 2014 Sefolosha signed with the Atlanta Hawks. In his first season with the Hawks, he spent most of his time on the sidelines due to injuries. After 3 seasons with the Atlanta Hawks, Sefolosha joined his current NBA team Utah Jazz in 2017. The year 2018 did not start well for the NBA player, as he was suspended for 5 games due to not being paid for violating the terms of the NBA/NBPA anti-drug program.

Off the court, the basketball player is married to Bertille Sefolosha. Bertille and Thabo first met in Chalon-sur-Saone, where Bertille studied and Thabo played for the Elan Chalon U21 team. Bertille, like her husband Thabo, is also of African origin, she is Cameroonian-French.

The couple constantly runs charity programs for less privileged Africans, not only in Africa but also for Africans around the world. They have two lovely daughters together, Lesedi Sefolosha and Naledi Sefolosha.

Thabo Sefolosha was born to a South African father, Patrick Sefolosha, and a Swiss mother, Christine Sefolosha. His father, who is also a musician, is from Mamelodi and his mother is a Swiss citizen, she is a painter and was born in Montreux, Switzerland. His parents married in 1982 but separated after 11 years of marriage.

Thabo is not the only child of Patrick and Christine Sefolosha, he has five brothers and two sisters. Like Thabo, his older brother Kgomostso is a basketball player, but he has never played in the NBA.
