Wolfgang Hohlbein is one of the most successful and widely read authors in Germany. Now a series adaptation of one of his best-known books is in the starting blocks: “Der Greif” will soon spread its wings on Amazon Prime Video.

The first teaser trailer for “Der Greif” is not particularly long, but at least 14 seconds are enough to get a first impression of the German fantasy series – and that too Amazon also reveals the start date on Prime Video: “Der Greif” will be released on May 26, 2023. By the way, unlike what you’re used to from the streaming provider’s prestige series, all six episodes come out in one fell swoop.

Unlike series like “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” and “The Wheel of Time”, otherwise Amazon would clearly have to try to build on the continued popularity of big fantasy series – and has a history of Wolfgang Hohlbein and Heike Hohlbein, which I’m sure some must have read there. After all, like so many books by the extremely successful author couple, “Der Greif” is a real bestseller.

If you’re interested in “The Griffin,” you can find the fantasy novel as a book, e-book, and audiobook on Amazon. In addition, the shipping giant is also planning a prequel series (“Tales from the Black Tower”) and an audio spin-off (“The Griffin: The Harbingers”), which will be released in the run-up to the start of the series and are partly included in the Prime subscription that is intended. Amazon has announced this in a press release.

This is “The Griffin”

The book by Wolfgang and Heike Hohlbein appeared in 1989, the series adaptation is now only minimally modernized and takes place in Krefelden in 1994. According to Amazon‘s press release, the setting in the 90s should be an important part of the story and “the attitude to life of an entire generation’ to the TV at home.

The focus is on Mark (Jeremias Meyer), Memo (Zoran Pingel) and Becky (Lea Drinda), who one day discover a fantastic and nightmarish parallel world: the Black Tower. The Black Spire is piloted by a world-eating creature, the titular griffin, and it soon emerges that Mark is the only one who can defeat the griffin.

However, Mark has little interest in taking on the mighty creature as a hero, after all, he has enough on his plate with his problems as a teenager. But when Mark’s brother Thomas (Theo Trebs) disappears, Mark, Memo and Becky must face danger, for better or for worse…
