Todd was born on August 3, 1994, in Baltimore, Maryland, the son of Darlene Simmons and Todd Gerome Gurley. He attended Tarboro High School in Tarboro, North Carolina, where he played soccer and basketball and also participated in athletic events.

He played for the school’s soccer team, both as a running back and a defensive back. In his junior season, he recorded a total of 1,472 rushing yards, seventy-nine (79) tackles, one interception, one forced fumble, and twenty-six (26) touchdowns. Todd Gurley was named Rocky Mount Telegram’s All-Area Offensive Player of the Year for the 2010 season. The following season (2013) he played ten games, stormed 989 yards with one hundred and sixty-five carries, and ten touchdowns. After the season, he was named the second-team All-SEC by the Associated Press. In 2014, Todd was suspended by the school authorities for violating NCAA rules and later received a four-game ban after investigations revealed that he earned $3,000 in two years by writing memorabilia and signing autographs.

In his first game after suspension, he tore up his ACL in the game against Auburn. The injury ended his junior season as well as his college career with Georgia as he decided to forgo his senior season for the NFL Draft 2015.

However, he made up for this record the following season: With 114 points, Todd led the league in the non-rookie category.
