Todd was born on August 3, 1994, in Baltimore, Maryland, the son of Darlene Simmons and Todd Gerome Gurley. He attended Tarboro High School in Tarboro, North Carolina, where he played soccer and basketball and also participated in athletic events.
He played for the school’s soccer team, both as a running back and a defensive back. In his junior season, he recorded a total of 1,472 rushing yards, seventy-nine (79) tackles, one interception, one forced fumble, and twenty-six (26) touchdowns. As a senior international, he also won the Associated Press Player of the Year award after scoring a total of 2,600 yards and thirty-eight touchdowns.
