But before we get into (spoiler-free) what makes the 2010 mystery thriller’s twist so legendary, here’s the plot for you:

That’s what “Shutter Island” is about

U.S. Marshal Teddy Daniels (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his colleague Chuck Aule (Mark Ruffalo) are sent to Shutter Island, a windswept island home to violent criminals with mental disorders. Teddy and Chuck must find out what happened to the missing patient 67 (Emily Mortimer). But that is not so easy, as the staff of the institution, especially the chief physician Dr. Cawley (Ben Kingsley) shows little cooperation. During the investigation, the research duo encounters more and more inconsistencies that arouse terrible suspicion…

That’s why “Shutter Island” and its twist are so great

+++ Opinion +++

First of all, “Shutter Island” would work as a gripping psychological thriller even without a twist. Because under the direction of Martin Scorsese (“Taxi Driver”), the film convinces in all technical areas. Leonardo DiCaprio delivers the usual intense, multi-layered performance, with Ben Kingsley he has an equal, opaque opponent, but the almost even bigger star is the scene.

The bad weather, the confident images of three-time Oscar-winning cameraman Robert Richardsons, and the many strangely behaving inmates (and employees) enhance the atmosphere of this storm-sealed prison, making it easy to put yourself in Teddy’s shoes. who ends up in this inhospitable environment as an outsider.

The fact that there’s a twist is just the icing on the cake that, in my opinion, takes “Shutter Island” from a good movie to an excellent one. We don’t want to spoil the surprising twist here, of course, but it’s that kind of twist that makes you see the whole story from a different perspective and makes you want to see the thriller again – what it’s absolutely worth. Because the twist easily resists a second sighting and sharpens the perception of numerous details that you didn’t even notice the first time around. But what makes the whole thing even more exciting is a clever little change from the book template.

While Dennis Lehane’s novel “Shutter Island” gives a very clear denouement of events, director-maestro Scorsese deliberately leaves the ending vague, so that you almost have to see the film a second time to form your own opinion which of the two possible scenarios is actually the right one.
