The incident happened on June 24, 2018, when an SUV hit the little girl at a Brooklyn laundromat.
The video of the accident went viral on online platforms, showing the vehicle bouncing up and down as it rolls over Luz Gonzalez.
Her mother, Reyna Candia, who was tying her daughter’s shoelaces at the time, was also injured in the incident. (Watch the video here)
After an investigation, the driver, Jeannette Maria, was charged by the public prosecutor’s office for failing to exercise due care.
However, some believe the allegations are minor and do not hold Maria sufficiently responsible for the tragedy.
According to attorney Steve Vaccaro, the video evidence of the incident should have been enough to charge her with a fatal hit-and-run because it shows the up and down motion of the vehicle as it rolls over the toddler on the sidewalk.
