Moening, who grew up on the 12th floor of a Philadelphia apartment building and became a tomboy at a young age, spent most of her time with her male neighbors. Her first interest in acting was awakened when she was 10 years old, a time when her best friend motivated her to play in a children’s theater. However, it wasn’t until much later in life that Moennig was sure that acting was what she wanted to do in the long run.

In her teenage years, Moennig was without focus for a long time. She didn’t seem particularly interested in academics and often snuck out to hang out with friends who weren’t even her schoolmates. Occasionally she would travel to New York City with these friends to attend parties. At some point in her life, she thought she would end up as a bouncer.

But after high school, Moennig seemed to have decided what she should do – pursue an acting career. It was her way to get away from Philadelphia where she didn’t want to be tempted to work in her father’s violin business. Her focus began to develop when she enrolled at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. She was 18 years old at the time.

Luckily for Moennig, her parents supported her, who always understood her lack of interest in academics. Kath began with commercials like most aspiring actors, one of which was shot for the now-abandoned Fleet Bank.

It wasn’t long before Kath gained a foothold in Hollywood. She made a big impression in her first film role, which she played in Young Americans’ drama series. Since then, Moennig has never looked back. Her earliest films include Love the Hard Way and The Shipping News.

Kath’s role as Shane McCutcheon in the lesbian series The L World became a breakthrough in her career and opened the doors to further appearances that followed soon after.
