He attended Washington Preparatory High School and then transferred to Crenshaw High School to complete his high school education. After graduating from Crenshaw, Larry went to Brown University for further studies. He later graduated with a B.A. in Political Science in 1974 and received his J.D. from the University of Michigan Law School in 1977.

Shortly after Elder graduated law school, he was hired by a law firm in Cleveland, Ohio. There he practiced litigation and later in 1980 founded Laurence A. Elder and Associates.
