Who is Nia Vardalos?

Nia Vardalos was born on September 24th, 1962 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, and was given the name Antonia Eugenia Vardalos. She came from a Greek-Canadian family whose patriarch was a farmer – Konstantin “Gus” Vardalos and his wife -, an accountant and housewife – Doreen Christakis. Nia has as her sisters Nancy Vardalos Ginakes and another one we have named Marianne. Considering that her parents had good jobs, you can say that Nia had a normal and fun childhood, so she went to college to pursue her dreams.

Nia Vardalos grew up at St. George’s School and Shaftesbury High School in Winnipeg before enrolling at Ryerson University in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, where she earned a BFA degree in drama.

After college, she began her career in 1996 with minor roles in the Drew Carey Show and Two Boys and a Girl. At the same time, Nia lent her voice to the radio adaptation of Star Wars: Return of the Jedi from 1996. Her big break as an actress came in the new millennium, in 2002, when she played the role of Toula Portokalos, a woman who had trouble finding love in the film she wrote herself, My Big Fat Greek Wedding.

On September 5, 1993, she married her husband Ian Gomez, an American television actor in the Greek Orthodox Church of St. Demetrios in Winnipeg. Before their marriage, he converted to the Greek Orthodox Church. There is no news of a biological child between the two, but they adopted a little girl named Illaria in 2008.

Ian Gomez was born on 24 December 1965 and is known for his work in Felicity as Javier and in Cougar Town, where he played the role of Andy. He has also starred in several of his wife’s films, such as My Big Fat Greek Wedding, I Hate Valentine’s Day, Connie and Carla, etc.

Sadly, not even the proximity of their careers would sustain the love between them. After 23 years of marriage, Nia Vardalos filed for divorce from her husband, citing regular irreconcilable differences. In July 2018 we learned that the two had been “respectfully separated” since June 2017. Nia Vardalos asks the court for “joint legal and physical custody” of her daughter.
