Dellin Betances almost missed an opportunity to go pro in the 2006 NBA Draft because he had previously signed up to play for Vanderbilt University’s Commodores. However, the New York Yankees picked him in the eighth round of the draft and persuaded him to leave Vanderbilt by granting him a $1 million signup bonus.

Beginning in 2007, he played for the Staten Island Yankees, the Charleston RiverDogs, the Tampa Yankees, the Trenton Thunders, and other teams that were ranked in Grade A and above.

On September 8, 2008, Dellin moved up to the Major League, and on September 22, 2008, he made his Yankee debut. However, he would only make two appearances this season. He spent the next two seasons with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. On August 11th he was called back and four days later he was ordered back to Scranton. He did not return to the Yankees until September due to the expanded squad of the league.

The 2014 season proved to be the year in which Dillen Betances made his breakthrough. He made it into the season-opening list and finished the campaign as the first newcomer pitcher since Spec Shea 1947 to be called into the All-Star Game line-up. He also usurped Mariano Rivera in late 2014 and became the relief pitcher in the history of the Yankees with the highest number of strikeouts. Matt Shoemaker and Jose Abreu replaced him in the American League Rookie of the Year awards.

In 2015, he became the first Yankee relief ever to score 100 consecutive strikeouts in fewer innings than his 2014 record and was named to the All-Star Game lineup for the second year in a row.

From the 2016 season onwards, Dellin formed a magnificent triumvirate with Aroldis Chapman and Miller, which left the opposing players in awe. They were affectionately referred to by Yankee fans as “No Runs D.M.C.”. Again, he ended the campaign in the All-Star Game line-up after beating over 100 batters in 73 missions.

In May 2017, Dillen Betances became a closer for the Yankees after Chapman and Miller, who were later traded in, became unavailable. On August 2, 2017, he hit a flawless inning, the sixth in Yankee history. Although the Yankees’ ace was sent off on August 24, 2017, for scoring a pitch against James McCann, the Yankees team still made it into the All-Star Game line-up for their fourth consecutive season.
