Khalid Donnel Robinson was born on February 11, 1998, in Fort Stewart, Georgia. He was raised by his single mother, Linda Wolfe, who made a career in the U.S. military as a supply engineer. She was also a member of the Army Choir.
Due to Khalid’s mother’s career in the military, the family was often relocated as she lived in various cities, including Fort Campbell, Kentucky, Fort Drum, Watertown, New York, and abroad in Heidelberg, Germany. He received part of his education in the European country before returning to the United States, where he attended school in New York and then the American High School in El Paso, Texas. During this time he became aware of his passion for music when he joined the school choir and took singing lessons.
During his final year of high school, Khalid began writing and recording songs that he uploaded to his Soundcloud site. It is said that he recorded music from the sheer loneliness of El Paso, where he found it difficult to fit in. His music soon won him a following in his community and, even better, caught the attention of RCA Records’ vice president of A&R, Tunji Balogun. The music manager was impressed by some of the young artist’s early releases and helped him work on his groundbreaking single “Location”, which reached #20 on the US mainstream R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay Charts in late 2016 and climbed to the Top 10 of the US Hot R&B Songs Charts in January 2017.
Khalid’s newfound success gave him the opportunity to work with artists such as Kendrick Lamar and Logic as he embarked on his first tour before releasing his critically acclaimed debut album American Teen on March 3, 2017. The album went platinum within months, earning him a number of awards and nominations, most notably from the Recording Academy (Grammys), while the rest became history.
