The multi-talented golfer was born on February 10, 1955, as Gregory John Norman in Mount Isa, Queensland, Australia. He was born as the son of Toini Norman and her husband Mervin Norman, who was an electrical engineer. As he grew up, Greg developed an interest in various sports, including rugby and cricket, and he wanted to become a surfer when he grew up. He completed his basic education at Townsville Grammar School and Aspley State High School in Brisbane.

When he was fifteen years old, young Greg started playing golf. He became the caddy for his mother, who was playing golf at the Virginia Golf Club in Brisbane at the time. In 1975 he was appointed golf assistant under Billy McWilliam. The following year he began working as a trainee at the Royal Queensland Golf Club, where he eventually launched his golf career.

As a professional golfer, Greg scored his first game win at the West Lakes Classic tournament held at the Grange Golf Club in Adelaide, South Australia. Shortly thereafter, he participated in the European Tour, which took place in 1977. His big break came in 1980 when he won the French Open and the Scandinavian Enterprise Open as well as the Australian Open and the Suntory World Match Play Championship.

In 1983, Greg began playing on the PGA Tour and he quickly rose to the forefront and became one of the dominant golfers of the ’80s and ’90s. He celebrated over 91 professional victories and was ranked as the world’s number one for over 331 weeks. Greg also became one of the top earners on the PGA Tour and won the 1995 Golf Player of the Year title.

In the late ’90s, Greg’s playing level went downhill after a shoulder injury he sustained at the time.
