He was born as the son of Toini Norman and her husband Mervin Norman, who was an electrical engineer. He completed his basic education at Townsville Grammar School and Aspley State High School in Brisbane.

When he was fifteen years old, young Greg started playing golf. He became the caddy for his mother, who was playing golf at the Virginia Golf Club in Brisbane at the time. As a professional golfer, Greg scored his first game win at the West Lakes Classic tournament held at the Grange Golf Club in Adelaide, South Australia.
