Who Is Neil Gaiman?

Those who can say one thing or another about this author’s legacy know that he comes from a Polish Jewish family. It is also common knowledge that his roots can be traced to a handful of other Jewish ancestors in Eastern Europe. In fact, it is said that his great-grandfather left Belgium and settled in Britain in the early 1910s.

His mother, Sheila Gaiman, was a pharmacist, and his father, David Bernard Gaiman, worked in a chain of grocery stores that Gaiman’s grandfather had founded in the south of England. Neil has two younger sisters, Claire and Lizzy. Claire is an associate of the Church of Scientology in Los Angeles. Although Gaiman grew up in close interaction with Jewish and Scientology practices, he does not believe in the existence of God nor is he committed to any religion.

Neil was born on November 10, 1960. According to various reports, he began reading at age four and immediately fell in love with the book. When he was 20 years old, he sent a letter to his favorite science fiction author R.A. Lafferty and asked him for advice on how to become a writer. In the early 1980s, Gaiman pursued a career in journalism, giving interviews and writing book reviews to learn about the world and network with the people he hoped would help him publish later. He wrote extensively for the British Fantasy Society. Gaiman’s first professional short story was Featherquest, a fantasy story published in Imagine Magazine in May 1984.

After making friends with comic author Alan Moore, whose work made Gaiman fall in love with comic books, Gaiman began writing comic books. Similarly, he tried his hand at graphic novels and wrote three with Dave McKean.

Gaiman’s work impressed the huge comic company DC Comics, and they hired him in February 1987. His first work for DC, Black Orchid, impressed the head of DC, and they offered to rewrite an old character, The Sandman. Gaiman’s story about The Sandman lasted from January 1989 to March 1996 and was very popular. Overall, this author has written several comic books for DC and currently directs the comic series The Sandman Universe. When asked why he prefers comics to other writing media, he replies that comics were created with the knowledge that he was writing in an unspoiled territory, in a medium where he would create something new that no one had ever done before.

Neil Gaiman married his wife Amanda Palmer, a songwriter and performer, on January 2, 2011. The couple has an open marriage and were together since June 2009. When he married Amanda, he took her middle name, MacKinnon. On March 18, 2015, the couple announced on Facebook that they were expecting their son Anthony. He was born on September 16, 2015.
