For hockey lovers and fans of the New York Rangers of the National Hockey League (NHL), the name Henrik Lundqvist rings out at every mention and will continue to do so. Before signing with the Rangers in 2005, where he has remained to this day, the Swedish professional ice hockey goalkeeper played for Frölunda HC in the Swedish elite series.

During his time in Sweden, Henrik is proud to be one of the best goalkeepers in the country. He has won the Honken Trophy three times and in 2005 he won the Golden Puck and Golden Helmet, two of the most prestigious awards in Swedish ice hockey.

In his professional career, Henrik holds the records as the only goalkeeper in the history of the NHL to have recorded 11 30 victories in his first 12 seasons, and he is also the current record holder for the most European-born goalkeepers victories in the NHL, 405.

Since his debut in the NHL, Henrik Lundqvist has also had a career of over 17 years of awards and honors.

Henrik Lundqvist Brief Bio

Lundqvist was born on 2 March 1982 in the Swedish town of Are in Jämtland (an area popularly known for alpine skiing) as the son of the family of Peter Lundqvist and Eva Johansson.

He is one of his parents’ three children, he has a twin brother, Joel, who is also a professional hockey player, and an older sister, Gabriella, who plays tennis.

Herink and his twin brother Joel were introduced to the game early in their lives by their kindergarten teachers, who transformed the kindergarten sandbox into an outdoor ice rink on which the twins often skated.

Joel and Henrik’s love and interest in hockey grew when their father Peter, who worked for a company that sponsored Västra Frölunda HC, took them to Scandinavia, Gothenburg, to watch the team play.

The twin remembered how performance-oriented they grew up, both in sport and at school. Henrik Lundqvist and his twin brother began playing organized ice hockey as members of Järpens-IF in 1991. During a training session, their coach asked if anyone wanted to become a goalkeeper, Joel grabbed Henrik Lundqvist and lifted Henrik Lundqvist’s arm.

The family had to go to Båstad, a province in southern Sweden, in 1993 to support their older sister’s tennis career. There the twins joined a Swedish professional ice hockey club, Rögle BK, and both were accepted into the Scania regional team in 1995. In the 1997-98 season, Frölundas was the junior manager and coach of the under-16s for Henrik and his brother, while they played in the 1998 Scandinavian Cup in Gothenburg. He spoke to their father about the team’s interest in his boys, and so the two boys began their path to a professional hockey career.

While Henrik currently plays for the New York Rangers of the National Hockey League (NHL) as a goalkeeper, his twin brother Joel still plays for the Frölunda HC of the Swedish Hockey League (SHL) as the center. He is also the captain of the team.

Career

After successfully starting his career with Florunda, Henrik signed with the New York Rangers of the National Hockey League (NHL) in 2005. The Swedish star is talented, popular, and well-liked by his teammates and fans in general. He has several nicknames like – “Hank”, “The King of New York”, “King Henrik”.

He made his NHL debut on October 8, 2005, and soon began to show what he is made of, scoring 30 victories to break the New York Rangers franchise record for victories by a goalkeeper rookie.

Henrik Lundqvist became one of the best and greatest goalkeepers in the NHL with 6 consecutive victories in more than 30 consecutive seasons at the beginning of his career, an NHL record, and in October 2011 began his seventh season as Rangers’ starting goalkeeper.

His stay with the Rangers is still full of recognition. In 2013 he signed a seven-year contract extension with the Rangers worth $59.5 million. With an average annual maximum amount of 8.5 million dollars, he is the NHL’s highest-paid goalkeeper.

In 2014 Lundqvist scored his 302nd victory, making him the most victorious goalkeeper in Rangers history, past Mike Richter. A week later he was eliminated for the 50th time in the regular season and became the Rangers’ run-out leader, overtaking Hall of Fame goalkeeper Eddie Giacomin.

Henrik Lundqvist is not only known as someone who always stays on goal in the ice, but also leads a very sociable life outside the ice. He is co-owner of a restaurant, Tiny’s, in the New York district of TriBeCa.

His dazzling and charming looks also earned him a place on People magazine’s annual list of “100 Most Beautiful People” in 2006 and was named “Sexiest Man on Ice” by Page Six magazine in 2009.

He also has a heart for people. In May 2018, just days after one of the Rangers’ fans, 11-year-old O’Callaghan Brendan, suffered serious injuries in a school bus crash in New Jersey that killed two other people, Henrik and his teammates turned to the young player and his family with a package from the NHL team. The package included a hockey stick signed by Henrik Lundqvist himself and a card with best wishes for Henrik Lundqvist.

Lundqvist is married to his long-time girlfriend Therese Anderson. The couple met in 1998 when Lundqvist played hockey for Frolunda. They met for 12 years before they took their relationship to the next level through engagement in 2010 and finally in August 2011.

They are proud parents of two daughters – Charlise and Juli. They welcomed their first daughter Charlise Lundqvist on 10 July 2012 and their second daughter Juli on 20 March 2015.

Henrik and Therese established the Henrik Lundqvist Foundation in 2014, a non-profit organization dedicated to the health and education of children and families.

Height

Henrik may not be a Goliath, but he is certainly tall, the hockey star stands at 185 cm (6 ft 1 in), his size certainly contributes to his sensational speed, athleticism, and strong positional play.
