Mark Sayers McGrath was born on March 15, 1968, in Hartford, Connecticut. His family later moved to Newport Beach in Orange County, California, where he attended Corona Del Mar High School. His musical career dates back to his time at the University of Southern California. There he founded the music group Shrinky Dinx together with Rodney Sheppard, Stan Frazier, Murphy Karges, and Craig Bullock. The group got a record deal with Atlantic Records in the early 90s and later the band name was changed to “Sugar Ray” after the manufacturers of the classic toy Shrinky Dinks threatened to sue.

Sugar Ray released their debut album “Lemonade and Brownies” in April 1995, but was not commercially successful. The band finally achieved superstar status in 1997 after releasing their first big hit “Fly”, which was included on their second album Floored. The song was massively played in the USA and topped the Billboard Hot 100 Airplay charts for four weeks. “Fly” is also credited with the ultimate success of the entire album.
Mark McGrath’s personal popularity skyrocketed in the late 1990s as his band Sugar Ray became more and more successful. The talented singer took full advantage of his newfound celebrity status when he appeared in several major magazines such as Rolling Stone and Spin. He also participated in several major award shows and was named “Sexiest Rocker of the 1998” by People magazine.
In 1999, McGrath’s band Sugar Ray topped their previous successes with the release of a third studio album 14:59, which went triple platinum and remains the band’s best-selling album to this day. This was followed by the release of a self-titled fourth album in 2002 and the band’s fifth album In the Pursuit of Leisure in 2003. Both albums, however, were recorded only lukewarm.
After the apparent decline of his music career in the 2000s, Mark McGrath made a smooth transition to TV hosting. In September 2004 he joined the cast of the long-running news program Extra as a presenter/correspondent. He appeared as a guest juror on American Idol (2005) and also hosted the reality television series Pussycat Dolls Present during the second season.
In July 2008, McGrath took a break from television when he returned to work on a sixth studio album with Sugar Ray. Studio albums with Sugar Ray. The album Music for Cougars was released in July 2009 but did not have much commercial success. He returned to television in September 2010 when he was awarded the hosting contract for the syndicated version of the game show Don’t Forget the Lyrics! Although it was short-lived, his appearance on the show proved to be one of his most memorable roles on television. In addition to several acting roles, the multi-talented singer also hosted the second season of the karaoke game show Killer Karaoke.
While McGrath’s television career flourished, his band Sugar Ray experienced some tough years when some of its members left the group. By 2011 only 2 original band members were left, McGrath and Rodney Sheppard, and together they recruited a number of new members. The band did some successful tours and headlined several sold-out concerts. However, they were not able to release new material because they were involved in a legal dispute with two former band members – Murphy Karges and Stan Frazier.

In summer 2015 Mark McGrath finally released his first solo project, an EP entitled Summertime’s Coming. He currently hosts his own show Mark McGrath’s 120 on the music channel Sirius XM. In early 2018, McGrath appeared in the first season of the reality contest Celebrity Big Brother, where he took second place.

Mark McGrath is currently married to an aesthetician named Carin Kingsland. The couple first met in 1994, after which they had a back and forth relationship for 16 years. They finally announced their engagement on New Year’s Eve 2009, and less than three years later, on September 24, 2012, they entered into a marriage. McGrath has two children (twins) with his wife, a son named Lydon Edward, and a daughter, Hartley Grace, born April 29, 2010.
