Mark Strong was born on August 5, 1963, in London, England. He was born the son of an Austrian mother and an Italian father and was given the name Marco Giuseppe Salussolia at birth. His mother, however, had him renamed “Mark Strong” as a child so that he could adapt to his peers. His father left the family soon after his birth and so he was raised exclusively by his mother. As he grew up, Strong and his mother moved several times due to the nature of their work as domestic help. He received his secondary education at Wymondham College in Norfolk, England, and for college, he attended Royal Holloway College, where he studied English and drama. It is also known that he attended the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School.

Mark Strong began his acting career in 1989 and has been cast in smaller roles in several television productions. He became known to British television audiences after he played the role of Detective Inspector Larry Hall in the police drama series Prime Suspect 3 (1993). His first film role was also as a police officer in the film Century (1993), after which he was cast in several British and international films, including Captives (1994), Fever Pitch (1997), The Man with Rain in His Shoes (1998) and To End All Wars (2001).

The extremely versatile actor has starred in Oliver Twist (2005), Stardust (2007), Body of Lies (2008), RocknRolla (2008), Sherlock Holmes (2009), Kick-Ass (2010), and Robin Hood (2010), among others. For his performance in Sherlock Holmes he was nominated for the MTV Movie Award 2009 for best fight alongside Robert Downey Jr. The following year he was nominated for the same award alongside Chloë Grace Moretz for his performance in Kick-Ass.

Strong has also starred in other films such as Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (2011), The Guard (2011), Mindscape (2013), Kingsman: The Secret Service (2014), Approaching the Unknown (2016), Kingsman: The Golden Circle (2017), and Catcher was a Spy (2018). He also landed a leading role opposite Zachary Levi in the superhero movie Shazam! (2019). The talented actor has also appeared in some remarkable stage productions during his career. His leading role in the play A View from the Bridge (2014-16) earned him a nomination for a Tony Award as well as a Drama Desk Award.
