If you are a hockey fan, you probably know the name – Sidney Crosby; if you are not a hockey fan, you may need an introduction to the captain of the Pittsburgh Penguins. Sidney Crosby is a professional ice hockey player from Canada and currently plays in the National Hockey League (the North American professional ice hockey league). He was also the first draft pick of 2005.

Sidney Crosby is considered one of the greatest hockey players of all time and was one of several players referred to as “The Next One”. The name is usually given to players who are considered the next “Wayne Gretzky”. Wayne Gretzky is widely regarded as the greatest hockey player of all time, and his nickname was “The Great One”. In his first season, he finished second at the Calder Memorial Trophy (which is also the NHL’s Rookie of the Year award) and won the Art Ross Trophy in his second season. This made him the first teenager/youngest player to win a top scorer title in a major North American sports league. He was also the most valuable player of the year and won the Hard Memorial Trophy. In the same year, he was considered by his colleagues to be the most outstanding player and also won the Lester B. Pearson Award.

Sidney began the 2007-2008 season as team captain and led the Pittsburgh Penguins to the 2008 Stanley Cup final; unfortunately, the team lost to Detroit Red Wings. In a happy series of events, the Pittsburgh Penguins met the Detroit Red Wings the following year and won, making Sidney Crosby the youngest NHL captain to win the Stanley Cup.

Sidney Crosby has also won the Mark Messier Leadership Award, the Maurice “Rocket” Richard Trophy, the Ted Lindsay Award, and the Conn Smythe Trophy. Due to his seemingly unstoppable success, he is considered one of the greatest hockey players of all time. He also has a place in the list of the “100 greatest NHL players in history”.

Sidney also represented Team Canada on several occasions, including the 2010 Winter Olympics and the 2005 World Junior Championships, where he won gold. He was also captain of Team Canada at the 2014 Winter Olympics, and in 2015 he led Canada to gold at the World Championships in Prague – making him a member of the “Triple Gold Club”. He is also the only member of the “Triple Gold Club” who was captain of the three winning teams. Other members of the Triple Gold Club are Eric Staal, Scott Niedermayer, and Rob Blake.

Sidney later captained the Canadian team in the 2016 Ice Hockey World Championship, and the team won gold. He was unanimously elected MVP.

Sidney Patrick Crosby was born as the son of Tina and Troy Crosby on August 7, 1987, at Grace Maternity Hospital in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Sidney grew up with his parents and younger sister in Cole Harbour. His father also played hockey and was a goalkeeper in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League for the Verdun Junior Canadiens. However, his father never played in the NHL.
