Kemba Walker is an American professional basketball player and plays for the Charlotte Hornets. In the 2011 draft of the National Basketball Association (NBA), he was the ninth overall selection of the then Charlotte Bobcats. Walker was named the most outstanding player in the Big East Championship and led the Huskies to the 2011 championship, and in the same year, he was named the most outstanding player in the NCAA Championship. He was an all-star NBA player. Before joining the NBA, he played on the University of Connecticut men’s basketball team.

Walker was born in the Bronx, New York on May 8, 1990, the son of Paul and Andrea Walker. He has three siblings, one sister, and two brothers. He attended Rice High School in Harlem, New York, where he played on the school’s basketball team and averaged 18.2 points and 5.3 assists per game in his final year of school. He graduated from Rice High School in 2008 and played in the New York Gauchos AAU basketball program. During this time he played alongside other Big-East players such as Danny Jennings, Jordan Theodore, and Devin Hill.
The Gauchos achieved first place in the nation while he was on the team. Rivals.com ranked Walker 5th in the 2008 Point Guard and 14th in the national rankings. After being accepted to the University of Connecticut (UConn), Walker played every game in his first year and was instrumental in helping the team become number one in the 2009 NCAA tournament.
Although he was not a starting player in most games, he managed to accumulate an average of 25.5 minutes per game – an outstanding performance for a non-starter. Walker became the national top scorer in his junior year with an average of 26.7 points, 3.8 assists, and 5 rebounds per game. Sports Illustrated has featured him on one of their regional covers. This promoted Walker’s popularity as an outstanding player. He was named MVP of the Big East Tournament and helped the UConn team win the University of Louisville in the 2011 Big East Tournament.
He scored a total of 130 points in five games, a remarkable record, and the highest number of points scored in the 15 previous seasons of a conference tournament. This achievement made UConn the first school to reach the conference championship in five games within five days. The USBWA named him the first all-American team.
Walker’s performance in the 2010-2011 season also led to him being voted into the second Team All American by Fox Sports, in addition to being named a finalist for the College Basketball Player of the Year award. He won the Bob Cousy Award for Best Point Guard in the Nation and the NCAA “Most Outstanding Player” basketball tournament. That same year, Walker was named to the Huskies of Honor list, an accomplishment that no one had achieved since its inauguration in 2006.
In December 2011, the Charlotte Bobcats agreed to a rookie contract with Kemba Walker, who became the team’s starting companion for the season after Darryl Gerrard Augustin’s injury in December 2011.
