Kemba Walker is an American professional basketball player and plays for the Charlotte Hornets. In the 2011 draft of the National Basketball Association (NBA), he was the ninth overall selection of the then Charlotte Bobcats. Walker was named the most outstanding player in the Big East Championship and led the Huskies to the 2011 championship, and in the same year, he was named the most outstanding player in the NCAA Championship. He graduated from Rice High School in 2008 and played in the New York Gauchos AAU basketball program. The Gauchos achieved first place in the nation while he was on the team. Rivals.com ranked Walker 5th in the 2008 Point Guard and 14th in the national rankings. After being accepted to the University of Connecticut (UConn), Walker played every game in his first year and was instrumental in helping the team become number one in the 2009 NCAA tournament.

Although he was not a starting player in most games, he managed to accumulate an average of 25.5 minutes per game – an outstanding performance for a non-starter. In the same year, he helped the Huskies advance to the round of the last four. The following season (2009-2010) he participated in all 34 games of the Huskies. This season UConn was placed 4th in the National Invitational Tournament. In 2010, he was voted First Team of the United States Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) All-District.

This achievement made UConn the first school to reach the conference championship in five games within five days. The USBWA named him the first all-American team.

Walker’s performance in the 2010-2011 season also led to him being voted into the second Team All American by Fox Sports, in addition to being named a finalist for the College Basketball Player of the Year award. He won the Bob Cousy Award for Best Point Guard in the Nation and the NCAA “Most Outstanding Player” basketball tournament. In December 2011, the Charlotte Bobcats agreed to a rookie contract with Kemba Walker, who became the team’s starting companion for the season after Darryl Gerrard Augustin’s injury in December 2011.
