Edward Allen Harris was born on November 28, 1950, in Englewood, New Jersey, and grew up in a middle-class Presbyterian family. He was raised by his parents, Robert Harris and Margaret Harris (née Sholl) in Tenafly, New Jersey. Harris has two brothers named Paul and Robert. He got his artistic side from his father Robert, who was a singer and part of a band that included musician and TV star, Fred Waring.

At the young age of 8, Harris got his first acting role, which appeared in a film made for television called The Third Miracle. However, this role was not the beginning of Harris’s career, as he returned to focusing on his education.

He attended Tenafly High School, where he played football and became captain of his team. In 1971, two years after graduating high school, Harris moved with his parents to New Mexico. At that time, Harris, who had briefly attended Columbia University, decided to pursue a career as an actor. He then enrolled at the University of Oklahoma where he studied acting.
