Thiago Silva is a Brazilian professional footballer and once the second most expensive defender in history. The quick, combative central defender, described by football journalists as a complete defender and leader, is the captain of his national team and club Paris Saint-Germain.
For three consecutive years – 2013, 2014, and 2015 – Silva has been voted one of the two best central defenders in the world. Read on to find out more about him.
Thiago Silva was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on 22 September 1984, the son of Thiago Emiliano da Silva, the son of his parents, Geraldo Emiliano da Silva and Angela Maria da Silva. The Silva family was poor, so they saw sport as a way out of poverty.
Silva showed promising signs as an adolescent footballer. His skills led to his acceptance into a special school for the Brazilian football club Fluminense, where he impressed the team’s coach as a defensive midfielder in a friendly match. Following this achievement, he was given a brief trial period with the club but was not given any playing time. This led to his unsuccessful attempts at other clubs such as Flamingo and Botafogo.
In 2000, Silva played in a flagship tournament in Sao Paulo, where scouts from larger clubs came to watch his team from the lower leagues. There he was discovered by a former Brazilian player who offered him a contract with RS Futebol Clube. In 2001, he became a full-fledged professional footballer and took part in the country’s third division and other regional tournaments.
Silva finally moved to Juventude in 2004 and had changed from midfielder to defender. With Juventude, Silva’s game improved remarkably, as did his team’s overall performance. He was considered the best-improved player of the season and was named Brazil’s third-best player. He was also inducted into the team of the season. This year proved to be a breakthrough year for Silva as a move to Europe was imminent.
Porto paid 2.5 million euros for Silva’s services in 2004. However, the 20-year-old defender only managed to play for the reserve team before being loaned to Dynamo Moscow in Russia next year. Silva still failed to get playing time before he was later diagnosed with tuberculosis, leaving him out of action for six months.
After recovering, Thiago Silva returned to Brazil to join Fluminense on a two-year contract. He picked up where he left off before leaving the coast of South America for Porto, where he played virtually every game between 2006 and 2008 and attracted attention. In his second season with the club, he helped the team win the 2007 Copa do Brasil, and his performance also earned him a place in the squad for the Brazilian Copa do Brasil preliminary round.
Having played over 100 matches for Fluminense, Silva was rediscovered by European heavyweights in 2008, notably AC Milan, who paid €10 million for his services.
From 2009 to 2012 he was chosen as the club’s defender of choice alongside Alessandro Nesta. He completed a total of 119 missions and scored 6 goals before being signed by PSG in 2012 for around 42 million euros, supported by Arab oil money. With Milan, Silva won the Serie A and Supercoppa Italiana in 2011.
Since 2012 Thiago Silva has been playing for the Parisians, leading them to five Ligue 1 titles, four Coupe de France titles, five Coupe de la Ligue titles, and three Trophée des Champions. He has also won a number of other individual titles, including two FIFPro World XI selections.
Thiago Silva’s Family – Wife, Children
Thiago Silva is married to Isabelle da Silva. The couple has two sons named Isago da Silva and Iago da Silva. It is unclear when exactly the couple got married or when the children were born. Isabelle can be seen and observed at her husband’s football matches and has expressed her frustration when her husband is not chosen. She is a person who prefers to keep details of her private life as private as possible.
