Setting a trend or going viral on social networks could be interesting and fun, but nobody wants to set a trend or go viral for the wrong reasons. Unfortunately, it has almost become the norm in social media to set a trend for the wrong reasons, and it is usually unavoidable that people post the wrong things from time to time, which then spread and end up offending many people, just like Emilyispro.

In 2015, Lily James (the actress who played Cinderella in the Disney film Cinderella), in an attempt to express her excitement about the successful Tokyo premiere of the film, wrote via Instagram: “Shinderera’s Tokyo premiere…”. The rather simple piece spread and generated a lot of hate messages, with many accusing her of racism for mocking Cinderella’s Japanese pronunciation.

Another example would be PR consultant Justine Sacco, who became one of the most hated individuals in the world with a single tweet that she thought was funny. Just before she was due to travel to South Africa in 2013, she had tweeted: “I’m going to Africa. Hopefully, I won’t get AIDS. Just kidding. I’m white!” and the whole internet came for her, if it had been possible, she would have been torn to pieces.

It’s true that there is freedom of expression in social media, but on networking platforms, you can’t allow yourself everything.

Well, of these two cases one can’t exactly say that they apply exactly to Emilyispro, because many might argue that the case of Lily and Sacco was just a case of mistaken identity, while the case of Emilyispro is a premeditated action aimed at deceiving an innocent audience and extorting money from them, well, you can just wait until you read the whole story behind their action before you decide where to put them.

Who is Emilyispro And Why Did She Fake Cancer To Get Donations

We will not give you her biography or background information about the streamer, as there is very little information about her online. Emilyispro is the online handle of the Twitch streamer Emily Schröder.

Emily is a Runescape streamer that has caused a lot of controversies lately. She collapsed during one of her streams and claimed to suffer from chronic lymphocytic leukemia. This became viral and aroused the sympathy of the audience who took the trouble to donate for her treatment. She allegedly earned over $100,000 from her viewers.

The controversy and the fact that she was called a cancer wh*re began after she denied ever having said she had this fictitious disease in another stream. People began to speculate that Emily Schröder must have faked the cancer story in order to gain sympathy and get donations – this led to the copypasta sentence “Emily faked cancer” that spread through social media.

The original video of the stream is nowhere to be found online, but the footage of Schröder talking about the 2013 incident can be found on YouTube.

YouTuber Vexxed defended Emilyispro when he uploaded a video on his channel discussing the controversy. In the video, Vexxed explained that the accusations against her were unjustified because there was “no evidence” that she had faked the diagnosis of cancer and that the whole staff was “just a meme”. Vexed later uploaded another video showing Emilyispro denying that she faked the cancer diagnosis.

Many called on the Runescape community to ban her, but she was not banned, which made people freak out, even more, when you consider that other people are banned from Runescape for less trivial offenses than the one she committed. A wheelchair-bound player was once banished from Twitch.tv after he was accused of faking his disability.

The player, named Angel “zilianOP” Hamilton, appeared regularly on Twitch.tv and was known to be paralyzed from the waist down, so he used the service to earn money through donations. The day his fraud was uncovered, Hamilton can be seen standing and walking in front of running cameras. Though he didn’t appear to be standing up straight, he was walking unaided.

After Hamilton’s incident, a Twitch spokesman came out to condemn his actions. He said it was a huge slap in the face for the Twitch community of members with real disabilities, and that Twitch had no tolerance for this kind of behavior. He added that the community would offer refunds to those who subscribed to his channel through their platform. This has raised questions as to why Emilyispro has not received the same punishment as Hamilton.
