The famous American football coach Mike Tomlin is one of the most respected coaches in the history of American football, not only because he is the 40th coach in the history of the NFL to win 100 games, but also because he won those games faster than his predecessors.

Tomlin has been coaching since 1995 and is currently the head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers – a position he took on at the age of 35. He was the third head coach hired by the Steelers since 1969, and in 2009, after winning the Super Bowl XLIII, he became the youngest head coach in NFL history to lead the Steelers to a Super Bowl championship.

Biography

The coach of American football, Michael Pettaway Tomlin, was born on 15 March 1972 in Hampton, Virginia. He comes from a football-loving family, with his father, Ed Tomlin, a well-known player in the 1960s. He graduated from Denbigh High School in Newport News, Virginia, and graduated in 1990 before joining the College of William and Mary, where he became a member of the Kappa Alpha Psi Brotherhood – a college fraternity of Greek letters founded in 1911 by Elder Watson Diggs, also known as “The Dreamer”, and a group of ten African-American college students. He later graduated from the university with a degree in sociology.

Mike Tomlin has an African-American ethnic background and is an American citizen.

Coaching Career

Mike Tomlin’s career as a trainer began in 1995 when he became a wide receiver trainer at Virginia Military Institute. The following year he worked as a graduate assistant at the University of Memphis. There he also had the opportunity to train special teams and defensive backs. In 1997, he moved to Arkansas State University, where he was first hired as a Wide Receiver Coach and later as a Defensive Backs Coach. He was also hired by Arkansas State University to coach their defensive backs. He served there for two years before moving to the University of Cincinnati, where he was hired as a Defensive Backs Coach in 1999.

The years 2001 to 2005 were one of Tomlin’s most successful years, during which he held his first position in the National Football League (NFL) as the defensive backs coach for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. There he learned about the Tampa 2 defense, which later helped him throughout his coaching career.

The Pittsburgh Steelers hired Mike Tomlin as their 16th head coach on 22 January 2007 after the team’s coach Bill Cowher resigned. In Mike Tomlin’s first ten seasons, he was able to accomplish many things that have rarely been achieved in the history of the NFL. Not only was he the first African-American head coach in the history of the Pittsburgh Steelers and the 10th in the NFL, but he was also the youngest and fastest NFL coach to win a Super Bowl when his team, the Pittsburgh Steelers, beat the Arizona Cardinals 27-23 in the Super Bowl XLIII. On October 29, 2017, he officially announced that he is the third coach in the history of the National Football League to achieve a better record in his first ten seasons with a team. He came behind John Madden (Raiders coach) and Curly Lambeau (Packers coach), who finished first and second respectively. Mike is also the Steelers’ second coach, having won three division titles in his first four seasons.

Mike grew up with his older brother Eddie, her father Ed Tomlin, and her mother Julia. His father played for the Montreal Alouettes in the Canadian Football League before he died of a heart attack in Ocala, Florida, in January 2012. Tomlin was then raised by his mother and stepfather Leslie Copeland.

The young and handsome coach is married to his long-time girlfriend Kiya Winston, whom he met while studying at the College of William & Mary.

Kiya Winston also attended William & Mary College, where she was a gymnast and medical student. The two fell in love and got married in 1996, one year after graduating. Since then they have lived together and supported each other in every phase of their careers.

While Tom worked at the University of Cincinnati, his wife decided to pursue her vocation as a seamstress. She was admitted to the university to earn a degree in fashion design from the school’s College of Design, Art, and Architectural Planning.

Mike Tomlin and his wife Kiya are blessed with three children – a girl born in 2006 named Harlyn Quinn and two sons – Michael Dean, born in 2000, and Mason, born in 2002. He currently lives with his family in Pittsburgh’s Squirrel Hill district. His wife owns a fashion company called Uptown Sweats, which focuses on modern tailor-made clothing for older women.
