In 2001, Diaz became a professional mixed martial arts fighter when he won Mike Wick in the IFC Warriors Challenge 15. The following year, Diaz won the IFC World Welterweight Championship after defeating Chris Lytle in IFC Warriors Challenge 17 in 2002. He defended his IFC World Welterweight Championship and also won the WEC Welterweight Championship at WEC 6 in 2003 with a fight against Joe Hurley, which he presented with a Kimura.

He grew up in a rough neighborhood where fights were occasionally held. Nick’s brother Nate Diaz is also an MMA fighter in the UFC.
