Omri Casspi is a professional basketball player of Israeli descent. He is known for his ability to play both small forwards and a strong forward position when needed. History was made in 2009 when he was drafted into 23rd place overall by the Sacramento Kings, making him the very first Israeli ever to be selected in the first round of an NBA draft. He currently plays for the National Basketball Association (NBA) “Memphis Grizzlies”. Here you can find more details about his career and his family, which I am sure you will love.
Who Is Omri Casspi
Omri Moshe Casspi was born on June 22, 1988, in Holon, Israel, the son of Shimon and Ilana. He has two siblings, a younger sister named Aviv Casspi and an older brother named Eitan. His parents were both born in Israel, and both also have Jewish-Moroccan ancestors. Omri has always been interested in sports since his childhood, and this became evident when he participated in junior competitions such as “Maccabi Rishon LeZion” and “Elitzur Yavne”. In 2005 Omri was appointed to the youth team of Maccabi Tel Aviv, where he won the state youth championship at the age of 13.
Omri Casspi made his professional basketball debut with the Maccabi team in Tel Aviv when he was 17 years old. In his rookie season in the Israeli league, he performed well with an average of 2.1 points and 4.2 points in 9.4 minutes per game. He was later loaned to Hapoel Galil Elyon in the 2006-2007 season, where he made his first breakthrough in 28 games with an average of 3.1 rebounds and 11.1 points. At the 2007 Nike Hoop Summit in Memphis for the World Select Team, Omri Casspi scored 14 points. In the 2007-2008 season, he was called back to Maccabi and helped the team reach the EuroLeague finals in 2008. In the same year, he achieved an average of 10.4 points and 4 rebounds per game, which earned him the title of “Sixth Man of the Year of the Israeli League”.
Omri Casspi then signed a lucrative multi-year contract with the Houston Rockets on July 16, 2013. Four years later, on February 20, he was transferred from his team to the New Orleans Pelicans in exchange for new players, including Langston Galloway, Tyreke Evans, and Buddy Hield. Omri, unfortunately, broke his right thumb after scoring a twelve (12) point in the 129-99 defeat to the Houston Rocket. This injury occurred only three days after he was traded to the Pelicans. After being suspended for more than 5 weeks, he was released on February 25, 2017.
Casspi signed up with the Minnesota Timberwolves on March 20, 2017, before pitching his tent with the Golden State Warriors on July 12. As a team player, Casspi rebounded 11 times, scored 17 points, and doubled his career in a 112-97 win over the Dallas Mavericks on December 14, 2017, and following his impressive performance at the Golden Warriors, he was approached by the Memphis Grizzlys on July 11, 2018, and finally signed a contract. It’s interesting to note that Omri Casspi has never participated in the NBA playoffs, which makes him the longest active player who has not participated in the playoffs. This puts him in fifth place overall in the history of the league.
Family – Wife
At this young age, Omri Casspi is already a family man. At the beginning of his career, many thought he would be celebrating more and just have lots of flings, but he proved to be a level-headed man. He and his gorgeous girlfriend of Israeli origin, Shani Ruderman, walked down the aisle in Tel Aviv Israel in June 2016. The wedding ceremony was a beautiful ceremony with only close family members present. Interestingly, the couple has only one child, a daughter named Sarai Casspi, who welcomed them on July 7, 2017.
Height, Weight, Body Stats
Basketball as a sport is on a different league of its own. It is a sport that is notorious for being suitable for athletes who possess a good combination of height and weight. Omri Casspi is quite gifted in the height department as he stands tall at 6 feet 9 inches (2.06 m) with a lean body frame and a weight of 225 lbs (102 kg).
