Questions were asked about his sexual orientation and in December 2000, in an interview with the Mirror, he was openly asked to comment on the many curious questions about his sexual orientation. However, he insisted that he did not owe anyone an explanation of what his sexual orientation was or who he had slept with and who he did not. Thus, the public could not explicitly associate him with being gay or heterosexual.
As the time in 2010 would have it, Martin publicly acknowledged his homosexuality status in a post on his official website and declared that he was gay: “I am proud to say that I am a happy gay man. I am very blessed to be who I am.” He continued that “these years of silence and reflection have made me stronger and reminded me that acceptance must come from within and that this kind of truth gives me the strength to overcome emotions I didn’t even know existed”. He stated that it was an inappropriate question for his election to have been asked disrespectfully in an interview he conducted in 2000.
