Tom Welling is one of Hollywood’s most radiant stars and talents; he is not only an actor but also a producer, director, and model. Tom is best known as Clark Kent in the superhero series Smallville, which aired from 2001-2011, and as Lt. Marcus Pierce/Cain in the Fox drama series Lucifer. Apart from the television series, Welling has also appeared in feature films and has advanced his career through jobs as a director and producer.
Tom Welling Bio
Tom was born on April 26, 1977, in Putnam Valley, New York, as Thomas John Patrick Joseph Welling III. Welling is the third of his parents’ four children; he has a younger brother named Mark, who is also an actor, and two older sisters, Rebecca and Jamie.
The Welling family moved around quite a bit during his childhood, and so Tom Welling lived in a number of states including Delaware, Wisconsin, and then Michigan, where the family eventually settled long enough for Tom to attend high school. He attended Okemos High School in Okemos, Michigan, where he was not only a member of the school’s drama group but was also active on the school’s sports team; he played soccer, baseball, and basketball.
After high school, he took a job as a construction worker before he was discovered by a catalog camera scout at a party in Nantucket. The scout convinced Tom to try modeling, and he enlisted the services of the Louisa Modeling Agency, for which he modeled until 2000 when he moved to L.A. and began modeling for big names like Calvin Klein, Abercrombie & Fitch, and Tommy Hilfiger. While modeling, Welling still had an eye for acting, and an opportunity arose for him to express his range of emotions, as he called it, when he was portrayed as Vía’s love interest in Angela Via’s music video “Picture Perfect”.
Welling began getting smaller acting roles and occasionally continued to model. In 2008 he appeared in the May issue of Vogue with the title “Superhero Issue”. His most important acting role was that of Rob Meltzer (karate teacher) in the second season of the CBS legal drama Judging Amy. He originally signed on for only three episodes, but producers kept him long after he received rave reviews from fans. He also got a supporting role in the science fiction sitcom “Special Unit 2” from UPN and also in the pilot episode of “Undeclared” from FOX.
Tom Welling made his feature film debut in 2003 as Charlie Baker in the family comedy Cheaper by the Dozen alongside Bonnie Hunt and Steve Martin. In 2005 he played Nick Castle in the horror movie The Fog, and in the same year he again took on the role of Charlie Baker in Cheaper by the Dozen 2. In 2013 he was a starring cast in Peter Landesman’s historical drama Parkland, and in 2014 he played the lead role in Ivan Reitman’s sports drama Draft Day alongside Frank Langella, Kevin Costner, Denis Leary, and Jennifer Garner.
His Role on Smallville and Lucifer
Tom’s breakthrough came with his role as Clark Kent in the superhero series Smallville, which was broadcast from 2001-2011. Welling revealed in an interview that he had twice refused the lead role before he agreed to take it, as did Christopher Reeve. Tom Welling was not a Superman fan before, but he didn’t know that the role of Kent would change his career forever. He discovered himself as an alien with superhuman abilities, which he, in turn, uses to save people in danger. He lives his life, keeps his abilities a secret, and tries to live as normal as possible like any other human being.
His role in the series has earned him several nominations and awards. In 2001 he was one of People magazine’s “Breakthrough Stars of the year” and in 2002 he won the Teen Choice Award as “Choice Breakout Star for the year” in the men’s category. In 2009 he won another Teen Choice Award as “Choice TV Actor (Action-Adventure)” for his role in Smallville. During the shooting of the 9th season of Smallville, Tom worked behind the scenes as a co-executive producer, and during the shooting of the last season in fall 2010, he was a full executive producer.
Tom Welling also made his directorial debut in 2006 in a fifth-season episode of Smallville called Fragile and other episodes such as Hydro, Apocalypse, Injustice, Absolute Justice, Patriot, and Booster. In 2017 he was cast as Lt. Marcus Pierce/Cain in the third season of the Fox drama series Lucifer.
In Lucifer, he plays the role of a respected police officer overseeing the work of Detective Chloe Decker (played by Lauren German), Detective Daniel “Dan” Espinoza (played by Kevin Alejandro), and Ella Lopez (forensic scientist for the LAPD, played by Aimee Garcia). Tom is then revealed as the immortal Cain; the first murderer in the world.
He also worked behind the camera as executive producer and director for the CW television series Hellcats, which was broadcast on the web between 2010 and 2011.
