Obscurity has become a choice today as the price to pay to go beyond it has become affordable due to the technology further facilitated by the Internet. In fact, social media through its various platforms has made it much easier to share ideas and knowledge, to make your talent known, even to the point of turning your inability into great and sought-after skills. Jessi Smiles is one of those who have found their niche on the Internet and have achieved popularity beyond imagination.
Jessi is a Cuban-American video content creator and Internet personality whose skills and humorous videos have helped her achieve unprecedented fame, or at least a fame she has never known before. She is also a singer and songwriter. However, she did not become famous through passive idleness, but through hard work and constant improvement of her favorite pastimes.
Who IS Jessi Smiles? Brief Bio
Jesse Vasquez is her real name, but the nickname Smiles replaced her last name and has been her identity since her involvement with the Internet in 2013. She was born on August 19, 1993, in Miami, Florida. Her parents were Rubin and Christina, but they divorced when she was a little girl. Her mother later remarried a radio and television personality, Joe Ferrero. Jesse has a brother, Joey, and three stepbrothers. Her mother and brother were in her videos.
While her brother is autistic, she suffered from an anxiety disorder, bipolar disorder, and oppositional defiant disorder. Jesse was home-schooled in her final years. She tried college but dropped out after a semester at Miami Dade. She thought that her dreams of becoming popular would never come true and resigned from a regular job after failing auditions for The X Factor and The Voice. Jesse Smiles worked in a laser removal spa and put on makeup, although this wasn’t what she wanted, it helped her pave the way to her fame.
What Did Jessi Smiles Do to Become Famous?
The journey of a thousand miles begins with a step that applies to Jessi. She was just a teenager doing the things teenagers are known for during their rebellious years, which are marked by exploration, trials, and mistakes, among other things.
After hearing about the now obsolete six-second video app Vine from a client for whom she did make-up, she decided to give it a try, if only to blow off steam while sitting in traffic on her way to work. After she got busy filming YouTube make-up tutorials, creating content for her Vine account was no big deal. She posted her first video, RIGHT NOW!!!!, in June 2013, and within a month she had 100,000 followers. With Vine, Jessi took her future six seconds at a time and would normally escape in it when faced with a situation she couldn’t handle.
Gradually she began to gain importance on the app. One of the videos that made her famous was The Shit Guys Care About, which doubled her following. She also attracted social media companies like Collab, which helps online stars monetize their videos. Eventually, she quit her nine-to-five job and began signing branding deals. Her popularity continued to grow, as did that of her followers when in 2013 she was associated with a Viner colleague, Curtis Lepore, with whom she would later go out.
Jesse couldn’t believe what she was dealing with, the amazing success that embraced her every day. She exceeded her old annual salary every month, saying it seemed as if her whole life had turned upside down, trying to make her meteoric rise to fame. In addition to cameos from celebrities like Pharell, she has partnered with top brands like Wendy’s, Boost Mobile, and American Eagle Outfitters.
By the time the Vine app was shut down, Jessi had won over 470 million loops and 3.6 million followers. However, the end of the app did not mean the end of its ever-increasing popularity. She switched to YouTube and created her own channel, JessiSmiles. There she posts make-up tutorials, challenge videos, vlogs, storytime videos, and so on.
In addition, the Internet sensation has ventured into other things. She appeared on TV shows like True Life and Good Day L.A. She played the role of Joan of Arc in the episode Miley Cyrus vs. Joan of Arc on the web series Epic Rap Battles of History. As a singer, she released her first single What If I, which exploded in the iTunes charts. The song was followed by Bitch, Please!
Jessi apparently has a touch of gold and collects followers in her numbers, on whatever platform she performs. With over 850,000 subscribers on YouTube, her Instagram can boast over 490,000 followers.
Jessi Smiles was also nominated for the Shorty Award for Best YouTube Comedienne and the Shorty Award for Viner of the Year.
Jessi Smiles Personal Life
Jessi met Curtis through the Vine app, they started dating and were open to sharing their relationship details with their teeming fans. At one point, over 2,000 fans gathered to see the Vine couple when the duo decided to meet for the first time after weeks of online flirting. On August 4, 2013, after Curtis’ announcement of their meeting on Vine in Washington Square Park New York, their fans and even the social media outfit Collab appeared to welcome and cheer them on. However, their love story turned sour in October 2013 when he allegedly raped Jessi while she was sleeping after suffering a concussion from a fall in Los Angeles.
In January 2014 he was indicted, pleading not guilty. He was released on $100,000 bail and the charges were dropped while he pleaded guilty to aggravated assault in February 2014. The following year, in February 2015, his charge of aggravated assault was reduced to a misdemeanor.
However, Jessi Smiles is taken off the market and is already a mother. The YouTube star met and dated Nassim Ssimou for several months, after which they became engaged in January 2017. According to her, they didn’t think it was necessary to wait years for engagement, even though they might not enter into the marriage bond for two or three years.
The duo married on April 14, 2017, when she was pregnant with her baby. On August 18, 2017, they welcomed their son Noah.
