Steve was born on July 21, 1974, in Freehold, New Jersey, but grew up in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He is of Irish and Korean descent. His father, Steven Byrne, is Irish and his mother, Ok Cha Byrne, is Korean.
Byrne has a younger brother, William Byrne, who he mentioned in his comedies. William served in the U.S. Army, as did their father. Steve attended Hampton High School in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He is also a graduate of Kent State University, Kent, Ohio.
He loves hockey and has played the game since he was six years old. He is a big fan of the Pittsburgh Penguins, and his favorite players are Dave Bolland, Mario Lemieux, Ron Francis, and Sidney Crosby.
His favorite movies of all time include MacGruber, A Christmas Story, Swingers, Superman, Couples Retreat, and Made. His favorite television shows are Saturday Night Live, Lost, and The Twilight Zone.
After studying theatre at Kent State University, he moved to New York City in search of a job. In NYC he became a member of the Carolines Comedy Club, his love for stand-up comedy was rekindled from there, and from then on he became addicted to it and began to pursue a career as a stand-up comedian.
He made his first stage debut as a stand-up comedian at Stand Up New York on September 30, 1997, after gaining experience and recognition through his work at the comedy club. He had to spend the first seven years of his stand-up career learning in his profession and becoming known for being on stage with passion as much as possible.
In 2003, Steve Byrne set out to make a documentary and developed 13 or Bust shows, performing 13 shows in one night at every comedy club in Manhattan, breaking the record for the most sets ever performed by a comedian in one night.
