Mark Jake Johnson Weinberger was born on May 28, 1978, in Evanston, Illinois, in Chicago. Jake’s father Ken Weinberger was a car dealer from a Jewish Ashkenazi family, while his maternal lineage is Irish, English, and Polish Catholic. He was raised with his older siblings Dan and Rachel by their single mother after their parents divorced when he was just 2 years old.

He attended New Trier High School, after which he studied at the University of Iowa. Johnson was accepted into the Tisch School of the Arts, New York’s drama writing department, thanks to a play he wrote while in Iowa. Johnson took a model from HBO’s sketch comedy, Mr. Show, with Bob and David and formed the sketch-comedy troupe The Midwesterners while still in New York. He worked as a production assistant and waiter to make a living after moving to Los Angeles. Johnson then got a more permanent job working on the Bob Odenkirk-produced minishow Derek and Simon.
In 2009 he appeared in Paper Heart, a mockumentary film, and was later cast for a small role in the Russell Brand comedy Get Him to the Greek in 2010. As a friend of Ashton Kutcher, he appeared in No Strings Attached.

Since 2011 Johnson has been starring in New Girl as Nick Miller alongside Zooey Deschanel. He was featured in a music video entitled Rouse Yourself by indie-soul band JC Brooks & the Uptown Sound with his co-star Aubrey Plaza in Safety Is Not Guaranteed. The talented actor also played the lead role in Jurassic World, where he played park computer scientist Lowery in 2015.

Travis in episode 8 of the first season of the TV series and Boris Spassky in episode 9 of the third season.
