Waka Flocka Flame is the stage name of the American rapper Juaquin James Malphurs. The nickname “Waka” was inspired by the expression “Waka Waka Waka”, the popular slogan of the Muppet character Fozzie Bear. The last part of the stage name “Flocka Flame” was given to him by his colleague Gucci Mane, who was his mentor and most important colleague in the past.

Waka Flame moved into the spotlight in 2009 after the release of his debut single O Let’s Do It. The hit single was nominated in the “Best Club Banger” category at the 2010 BET Hip Hop Awards. The single’s success effectively brought him out as a mainstream artist, followed by other hit singles such as Hard in da Paint (2010), No Hands (2010), and Round of Applause (2012) with Drake. He has also achieved other important collaborations with industry giants such as Diddy, Rick Ross, Ludacris, and Lil’ Wayne.

The rapper was born on 31 May 1986 in South Jamaica, New York. His family later moved to Riverdale, Georgia, where he grew up. As an adolescent Waka Flocka came into contact with show business at an early age. His mother, Debra Antney, owned the management company Mizay Entertainment, where Gucci Mane was under contract.

Following the success of his debut single Let’s Do It (2009), Waka Flocka released his first studio album, Flockaveli (2010), named after the late Italian philosopher Machiavelli. The talented rapper was nominated for “Rookie of the Year” at the BET Hip Hop Awards 2010. On MTV’s list of the hottest MCs of 2010, he also took 8th place.

On June 8, 2012, he released his second album Triple F Life: Friends, Fans, and Family. He introduced the world-famous Canadian rapper Drake on the album’s lead single entitled “Round of Applause”.

Waka Flocka is one of the first signatories of Gucci Mane’s record label 1017 Brick Squad alongside his fellow rapper OJ Da Juiceman. Waka Flocka met Gucci Mane at the age of 19, and Gucci Mane is widely regarded as his mentor. However, the relationship between the two rappers has been frosty in the past, with a lively exchange in social media and the release of diss tracks against each other.

Waka Flocka’s career has also been marked by several controversies and a number of clashes with the law. In 2010, he was shot twice during an attempted robbery in Atlanta. He was also arrested on several occasions for offenses such as possession of mar*juana or firearms.

The couple performed together in the 3rd season of the VHI show Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta (2014). They are both parents of a daughter named Charlie (born 2005), Rivera’s child from a previous relationship.

Waka Flocka’s mother, Debra Antney, has been instrumental in shaping the rapper’s musical career. She is the founder and CEO of Atlanta-based management company Mizay Entertainment. In this capacity, she has managed several major music acts including Nicki Minaj, French Montana, OJ Da Juiceman, Gucci Mane, and her own son Waka Flocka Flame.

Debra Antney worked particularly on Nicki’s third mixtape Beam Me Up Scotty (2009), which helped catapult the latter to fame. However, her working relationship with Gucci Mane did not go so well. Gucci Mane fired Antney as their manager in 2010 before starting their own record label. Debra Antney also co-wrote the VH1 reality show Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta.

Waka Flocka has a total of 7 siblings; 4 biological brothers and 3 adopted sisters. In 2013 the rapper’s family suffered the tragic loss of their son and brother Coades Scott, whose stage name was KayO Redd. Unfortunately, the 27-year-old took his own life in his home in Georgia on December 29, 2013. Just like Waka Flocka, Kayo Redd was also a rapper. The incident had such a profound effect on Waka Flocka that he made several important changes in his lifestyle to cope with the tragedy.
